Dog eating her own shit

teaforthree · 20/06/2013 11:38

How do I stop this? Confused at the minute I'm saying her name sharply and she comes running over sheepishly but why is she doing it in the first place?!

She's fed regularly, meals twice a day and treats. She can't be hungry?

Last night she was sick as well, and I'm sure it's from eating crap, literally.

Some dogs just do, some grow out of it, some don't. Working on a solid 'leave' cue and being vigilant at picking up can help.

I've heard that a way to stop this is to incorporate some pineapple into the dog's diet. Apparently it makes the shit taste nasty to them. Don't know if it works. My dog used to eat sheep shit, he (pretty much) grew out of that.

GrimmaTheNome · 20/06/2013 11:56

I googled to see if I could find out more about the pineapple, and found this which may have some useful information.

Good luck!

How old ?

My pup used to do that but doesn't now (about 10 months old).

All helpful advice Smile thanks. She's a 16 mo rescue. She's only been with us for two weeks so wasn't entirely sure if it was normal! Going to try 'leave it' and clicker with her since she's been responding really well to it. Then try pineapple!
She's not cooped up, she gets two/ three long walks and spends the rest of the time asleep, doesn't mess in the house when I'm out and only ever eats it if she shits in the garden, on walks, she doesn't but I guess she doesn't get chance.

She's fed harringtons, we were feeding her Husse but the RSPCA stopped it suddenly and weren't sure what else was good from the supermarkets.

Our sheepshit eater was 10 months when we got him and - trying to remember - I think he more or less stopped by the time he was two. I would think its a bit easier to manage if its just her own output.

daisydotandgertie · 20/06/2013 19:22

They all eat shit at some point.

It could be stress, it could be that in her previous life she was I'll treated for pooing in the house, therefore she tries to clear the evidence, it could be that there is a dietary deficiency.

Whatever it is, it is a horrible habit which can be quickly broken by being super vigilant with poo picking. Get rid of it as soon as it arrives, and then she'll have none to chomp on.

notapizzaeater · 20/06/2013 19:23

My mum had a rescue dog and was told its cos n the streets that could be the next meal. There solution (which worked) was as soon as dog did it to sprinkle liberally with pepper - he soon learnt that poo didn't actually taste good

Lilcamper · 20/06/2013 21:48

While you are taking the time to sprinkle it liberally with pepper you might as well pick it up and get rid of it, the dog doesn't get a nasty surprise and also doesn't eat the poo, even better solution.

Took her for her normal walk yesterday, started crouching to shit but she was curled round and soon as she finished she had some even though we went 'leave', tugged her harness and was armed with a bag. Clearly just wasn't fast enough.

When we got her, to encourage not to mess in the house we gave her lots of praise and a few treats but we stopped it this week, could that be it? Ah well Rome wasn't built in a day, like posters have said, she'll probably grow out of it...
