I was just playing sticks with my dog and as I had a stick in my hand I turned to talk to my Dd he jumped up to get the stick but got my hand instead.

Do I really need to sit in the minor injuries clinic for hours to get a tetnus? Please say no

Depends on when your last one was - ring your GP and ask

LEMisdisappointed · 18/06/2013 15:42

No, ring your local walk in or GP and make an appointment. But you should probably have one

'It is possible to catch tetanus from an animal or human bite. Tetanus is a potentially fatal infection of the muscles and nervous system.
The bite itself does not cause tetanus but it allows a break into the skin that can provide the tetanus bacteria ("Clostridium tetani") with a way to enter the body.
The most common symptom of tetanus is stiffness in your jaw muscles. This is sometimes known as lockjaw. It can make it difficult for you to open your mouth. Muscle stiffness and spasms can then spread to other parts of your body.
The symptoms of tetanus can develop from four to 21 days after the infection has taken place.
If you do have a bite that has a risk of being infected by tetanus then you can be given tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG).
TIG is a medication that contains antibodies that kill the tetanus bacteria. Antibodies are infection-fighting cells. TIG is given as an injection into a muscle and gives immediate, short-term protection against tetanus'

Call your GP but don't get too worried. It is very very rare.

I stood on a rusty nail the other week and it broke the skin and bled a little bit. I rang the dr and they said I have to have tetanus but when I saw the nurse she said as long as I had all my jabs when I was a baby and had the booster one at high school I would be fine and that a booster jab wouldn't give me anymore protection than I already have

mrslaughan · 18/06/2013 19:50

I just double checkked if I should have another tetnus - walk dog through fields and are with horses most days, was told if you have had 3 jabs, you will have lifetime protection.

Slavetothechild · 18/06/2013 19:51

I had all my childhood jabs and a booster, but caught tetnus from a dog bite ! Not pleasent . If it drew blood get a jab dont be a woosy like me and make things ten times worse ;)

ihatethecold · 18/06/2013 21:47

I got bitten a few weeks ago.
I rang my GP who said my last jab in 2007 was still valid.
I think it lasts about 10 yrs.

You are far, far less likely to get tetanus than you are to get horrible cellulitis, tendonitis or septic arthritis from a dog bite to the hand. Most GPs seem unaware of the nasty bacteria found in a dog's mouth, not to mention the potentially severe consequences of infection in the hand, and get their knickers on a twist about tetanus which is truly rare.

If you see any signs of skin redness around the wound seek medical attention quickly.

I am always gashing myself with rose thorns. I was told by a dr, that it is advisable to squeeze as much blood out as possible immediately as the blood will flush any/most bacteria out, lick the wound as saliva also has bacterial fighting properties.
So I do this every time, even with small cuts from a knife accident in the fingers. Never had an infection.
BUT last year, I got cellulitus from a nasty insect bite .on my ankle < which did not bleed> my whole leg swelled up and had ABs and AHsShock
