Weimaraner tail!

Marigold1 · 04/06/2013 09:12

Has anyone got any tips on how to stop my boyfriend's Weimaraner's tail from splitting/bleeding? She's always really pleased to see people and her tail goes crazy and then will hit a piece of furniture and start to bleed. It doesn't seem to cause her discomfort but maybe she's just v brave!
We do try to put a plaster over the end but this is always nibbled off!
Any advice very welcome, thanks in advance.

Some times dogs will keep knocking their tails and make them bleed then eventually the tail hardens and stops bleeding when knocked. In others this doesn't happen and the tail can get infected, this can lead to amputation :( you can try making a tail guard to protect it it needs padding to work. It is a tricky problem in dogs you need to harden the end of the tail a product called nu stock is very good. It has sulphur that dries the skin. Never try softening the tail as it will spilt even more. Good luck ( I hate tails !!!! )

Ha, my Dally did this - we ended up with blood on all walls at tail height.
We got it bandaged until it had completely healed, which was a few weeks.

Slavetothechild & HotPanda, thank you very much for your replies.
I will give the nu stock a go, luckily it never gets infected. We are constantly shouting tail tail whenever anyone comes round! Thanks again.

Poor pup! Dogs have a very high pain threshold, so they'll often not be able to tell you if anything's wrong.

Max, my Weim, still thrashes his tail around (see bruises on thigh....) but I've never known it to bleed.

Approaches:

Get big syringe from vets and chop end off then put over tail and tape all round and a good six inches down tail.

Use grey plastic pipe, the kind you buy in b and q, cut appropriate size then tape in place...again at least six inches down tail too. Make sure the tape covers all the pipe.

If using plaster use the sort you cut to size and put a 4inch piece over tail end then wrap round the length for six inches or so. You can then cover this with vet wrap which you can find online reasonably cheaply.

Thank you for all of the replies, happy to report its healing/drying up nicely now.

Good news. I remember being surprised at how long it took to heal over properly, so hope you are well on the way
