New puppy anyone?

I have seen new puppy threads before, and seeing as I have just picked up my very own new puppy (so exciting!) I thought I would start a thread and see if anybody else had one or was about to get one, so we can all chat about them!

Well mine is nearly 13 weeks now so is still technically a new puppy!
What breed is yours? And good luck :o

ShinyPenny · 02/06/2013 12:31

Mine is eleven weeks old already, a lurcher. How about yours? How are you getting on? Are you using a crate? :)

My new puppy arrives any minute now! He's a 10 week old Jack Russell (I already have a seven year old Jack Russell who is very accepting of other dogs in the house) and I'm so looking forwards to mad puppy times again.

I shan't be using a crate but that's a personal choice I've made with all my dogs. I know they work well for others.

We pick up our fox red lab puppy next weekend! Been counting down the days! :-)

plainjaney · 02/06/2013 15:59

I picked up my Mums new little boy yesterday, he's named Charlie, he's a Shih Tzu and he's 8 weeks old. Pic here:
Charlie

He's a real little character! Mum is 75 and lost her little Shih Tzu Leo last month, she's been on her own since Dad died so I was concerned that without the company of a dog she would just give up. Shes fit and healthy and I promised to look after him if anything happened to her so she relented.
Never seen her so happy as she has been this week!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 02/06/2013 16:32

I have a 13 week old mutt who is currently asleep after digging up my flower beds He's a pain in the bum, but adorable so he's forgiven Grin

MrsFrederickWentworth · 02/06/2013 16:39

No, but my 1 year old jrt thinks he is...

ShinyPenny · 02/06/2013 20:20

I haven't got a crate but I don't know if I should get one. Oh, any toys a particular hit? We've just got a kong and some teething bone things so far.
I hope there isn't too much crying tonight...

Hello,

Our lab is 11 weeks and hell on wheels paws! Just kidding, she's lovely.

She's doing great with her toilet training, most days are accident free. She did do a piddle in the lounge this evening - all my fault - thought she was crying because she was scared of the printer Blush. I've so far got sit, lay down, paw, rollover, come and off going on but trying to teach stay, no bite and leave it are proving tricky. On Tuesday I get to take her for her first actual walk, cannot wait. she's getting so heavy to carry round the shops, park, car boot sales etc. Also cannot wait until the day she stops lunging like a mini-shark and sinking the puppy teeth in - 'it will get better' is my mantra Grin

I must say the 8 weeks waiting for her to arrive seemed to drag on forever but we've had her for nearly 4 weeks now and it has really flown by! She has never pooped/peed in her crate, never cries on a night, just walks in her crate when I say bedtime and it's so good carrying the wiggling, licking ball of fun downstairs for a wee in the morning. Having a dog again is what I've been missing (despite having my two kids I've really missed having a dog, he died not long before I was pregnant).

Any idea's for first walks anyone?? Was thinking just a quick trip around the surrounding streets for 10 minutes early morning?? She's signed up for puppy class too.

topbannana · 02/06/2013 20:58

shiny he is a working cocker not for the faint hearted! We call him The Land Shark :o
We do use a crate, always have with puppies.
He is great, very hard work but worth it. ATM we are working hard on house training- he is good with me as I am a mother and therefore have eyes in the back of my head. DH on the other hand misses the more subtle signs so we have a way to go yet, though the last week has seen massive improvements :)
He is a bitey bastard at the moment which has put DS off slightly. I have assured him this phase will pass but I concede it is quite wearing for a 9 YO to be the permanent object of a puppies teeth attention!
Glad he is out and about properly now. We had to admit defeat and walk him on private farmland as he was going mental being carried and had taken several very determined flying leaps from our arms to get down. Now he's all jabbed and upto date he is a lot calmer as he can run off some of his excess energy

MrsFrederickWentworth · 02/06/2013 23:24

Ohhh, a working cocker, heart melts.

HotPanda · 03/06/2013 12:46

Me!
I picked up my 8 week old at the weekend. Currently all she wants to do is cuddle which is adorable. We've been taking her into the garden lots, but she prefers to just sit inside the backdoor looking out at us running around the garden like loons trying to get her to play.

We have started crate training. By that I mean she eats in there, and has her bed in there but the door is permanently open. She sleeps in there fine and comes out when she wakes up whereby she is whisked straight out into the garden for toileting. Over the next few days we will try closing the door and see how we do.

Whoknowswhocares · 03/06/2013 13:40

This thread is making me sad. My pup is 19 weeks now and it's all gone so fast Sad
However much hard work it is, make sure you take the time to enjoy it. Looking back, that first 'tiny puppy' stage doesn't seem to have been long enough.

MadeOfStarDust · 03/06/2013 14:18

We have a westie who is still a "puppy" at nearly 2 years old!!! or thinks he is anyhow.. all hopping around, chin on the ground, bum waggling in the air.....

We have crated from day 1 - the main advantage to us is he can go anywhere - when we go on hols he comes too and is crated, so is always happy sleeping wherever - and when he has been to kennels his crate goes too - so he sleeps happily there too....

We didn't have to crate train him - we just left a Tshirt with the breeder the week before we picked him up - has his mum's smell on it - used it as his bedding - so he has always loved being in there..... Still toodles off there in the day if he wants to sleep uninterrupted by kids....

Pandemoniaa · 03/06/2013 16:16

My new pup is adorable. I had wondered if there was any (unlikely!) possibility that I'd have a quieter Jack Russell this time but the pup is gloriously bold and is certainly not prepared to take a back seat. I'd forgotten just how glorious it is to have a pup. Although forgetting to watch where I put my feet this morning wasn't quite as glorious since the arrival of the postman had an interesting effect on the puppy's bowels. The result of which I accidentally stepped in....

LegoAcupuncture · 03/06/2013 16:20

I have an 11 week old lurcher x doberman. She looks like a lab though Hmm. She is very lovely. Had her at the beachfor the first time yesterday and she went crazy in the sand.

She is quite timid of other dogs though, not surprising really as one of the first dogs she encountered tried to have his wicked way with her Grin

LegoAcupuncture · 03/06/2013 16:27

Have put a photo of her on my profile from the beach yesterday

QuietTiger · 03/06/2013 19:14

We're suckers for punishment in this house. Grin We have our 10 month old collie hooligan, who was and still thinks he's a puppy, we have a 12 week old Ewok puppy and 3 weeks today we pick up our new 6 week old border collie puppy. Along with 2 other adult collies who think they are puppies.

Yes, we are insane. Grin

crockydoodle · 03/06/2013 19:36

Charlie is beautiful.

ShinyPenny · 03/06/2013 20:32

She looks just like a lab Lego!

We couldn't get into a puppy class until the end of July! :(

What do you think about letting your dog meet other (naughty) dogs? I don't know many people with dogs, and I know I ought to be socialising mine, but half the ones I do know are badly behaved! Does that matter? Maybe utterly untrained to me doesn't mean lacking in dog manners?? Basically, I don't know whether to invite my brother in law around with his spoilt pair of mad JRs or not!

LegoAcupuncture · 03/06/2013 20:38

We couldn't get into puppy class until he end of this month, so we are going to parks etc where I know other dogs will be. Like the beach yesterday, it had a dog area so definitely lots of dogs there.

Quite lucky though that my sister has a new puppy as well, so they're socialising together.

Pandemoniaa · 04/06/2013 10:39

I don't do conventional puppy classes - JRTs tend to find the whole concept of them amusing rather than educational. But that doesn't mean I have untrained dogs either since I put a lot of work into training my pups. I'm lucky to have lots of friends with dogs and puppies and Flash started socialising immediately. Yesterday was spent with a 5-month old JRT and today he'll be meeting a collie x.

It's been my experience that dogs don't necessarily learn bad manners from other dogs provided you remain consistent about your training. My now Senior Dog, looks at bad mannered dogs with an expression more suitable for a Maiden Aunt and then looks back at me as if to say "Would you believe it?!"

I always keep a very watchful eye in the company of naughty dogs though. Not so much because it is catching but because I'm never sure how reliably behaved a bad mannered (in reality probably an untrained) dog will be. But everyday socialising is just as important as formal puppy classes, imho.
