Jaydog is usually calm and quite friendly but there is a few times he has growled at dogs for no reason (that we can see) today it was a neighbours dog well she is dog sitting, tiny little terrier came up to him they had a sniff and jaydog was nearly through the fence at him Blush I was thinking oh god he could eat that little thing in a gulp . the Ld just wandered off not that bothered, but it just had me confused as to why he is fine with some dogs and not others ?

GingerDog is really unpopular and gets attacked frequently. After much observation we have come to the conclusion that it is him and relates to the way he greets other dogs that seems to get their backs up.
Perhaps JayDog has a highly developed sense of manners and dislikes being approached in a rude way :o

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 29/05/2013 15:53

Mine's the same. I think he likes older, more restrained dogs that are confident, but young, bouncy or nervous dogs make him nervous. So he chases them away Hmm He also always gets nervy around intact males. He's been neutered.

mrsjay · 29/05/2013 15:56

this litle dog is a old man he is really sweet but perhaps he was too forward for him Grin they sniffed and then he growled he wasn't bouncey or anything, he also takes exception to a golden lab on his walks but the lab is walked with a huge great dane type dog and he is fine ( and hangs of its ears)

TBF on jaydog he wasn't soiclaised as a puppy as far as we know he sort of brought himself up in his last owners back garden so maybe he is still a bit aloof

My dog is a complete nob with small dogs, which is stupid because she's a really small dog. She is perfectly well behaved with my dads big fat lazy mutt, which is odd because she's never met hm before.

mrsjay · 29/05/2013 15:59

IT is weird colditz

My dog hates Labs. Hates them. He hates their happy, smiley faces, their super waggy tails, they're joyful galumphing towards him...everything. Yet he is quite happy to be greeted by staffies, boxers, terriers and rotties. We secretly think he's embarrassed by his cute looks and big floppy ears and wishes he was a well 'ard dog Grin

mrsjay · 29/05/2013 16:03

bet he hates his cutey campness chickens bet thats what it is Grin

One of mine hates collies. Absolutely loathes them. Unfortunately, agility being somewhat dominated by collies, it makes competition very difficult in that I'm the one hovering at the back of the queue with a snarling, be-hackled dog who I am seriously considering muzzling for future events. Blush

It's something about the 'eye', the starey creepy slinky thing they do, plus a few bad experiences with aggressive ones, coupled with the high pressure and exciting atmosphere at competitions so her blood is up anyway.

Spotty boy dog loves everyone but occasionally likes to demonstrate this by screaming at them.

francesdrake · 29/05/2013 16:34

My dog loves everyone, apart from the black lab next door. And, by extension, all other black labs, in case it's actually the black lab from next door. No amount of bribery, cooing, ignoring, friendly introducing has worked in 3 years. Luckily (?) Next Door Lab seems to have a similar irritating effect on the rest of the local dogs. He must be like the Simon Cowell of the doggy village.

mrsjay · 29/05/2013 17:28

dd just took jaydog outside and the LD was there and he sort of looked at it then went for a pee so thats progress maybe he was just shocked that this little old man dared to be near his garden Grin

It will be to do with subtle canine body language that is too quick/subtle for us to read effectively.

If you're interested, Turid Rugaas, has a fab book and dvd about canine communication and you can also view some canine communication observations on YouTube, eg, that are eye-opening.

It's fascinating and addictive once you start getting into observing and understanding canine communication and can be really useful in helping us communicate more effectively with our dogs.

Lilcamper · 29/05/2013 19:12

It's fascinating moosemama and ruins programmes like You've Been Framed for me! 'That dog isn't happy, look at his whale eyes! Oh my life he was lucky not to get bitten with those calming signals' etc Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 29/05/2013 21:30

My neutered male really (and I mean really) hates intact males. He'll go absolutely crazy bonkers and start with the fish-on-a-line thing, leaping, snarling and barking at the offending dog. He especially hates Stanley, a massive black retriever we see sometimes.

mrsjay · 30/05/2013 09:12

oh moose I will have a look at that ta muchy Smile

GemmaTeller · 30/05/2013 09:19

My male dog hates collies, really snarlingly hates them.

Other dogs he will will ignore and walk past.

mrsjay · 30/05/2013 09:40

mine is a collie of sorts a bit of this collie a bit of that collie they can be quite sly always on the look out to round up I can see why other non collies would be a bit nervous of them

One of mine hates labs and some spaniels. I came to the conclusion this is because these are often the does which will come running over, approaching full frontal, off-lead (when he is on-lead). He's not keen on dogs approaching him from the front.

Ullena · 30/05/2013 10:38

Davedog hates all other sentient beings Sad

On the plus side, he no longer hates inanimate objects, so we are making progress! Someday I will be able to let him off lead. Someday...

Oh, and Colliedog is weird utterly disinterested in other dogs. So ner.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 31/05/2013 08:20

Our rescue dog is dog-reactive when on-lead, mainly with other males the same size or bigger than him (he's a Springer). He particularly hates black Labs, Dobermans and English Setters.

Fortunately we have a deserted set-aside field nearby so we can give him the off-lead walks he adores, and he gets walked ridiculously early in the morning and again in the afternoon before the after-school, after work walkers come out.

I wouldn't expect every dog to like every other dog - we don't like every person we meet, do we? - but a dog-reactive dog is hard work and takes careful management.

ExcuseTypos · 31/05/2013 09:14

My JR loves all dogs apart from big black ones. She used to be very nasty and snarly to them, but friendly and tail waggy to every other dog.

As soon as I saw any other dog, I started to give her a biscuit and really praise her. This meant she associated any dog with a biscuit. It has really helped and she's now fat and friendly to most dogs.

mrsjay · 31/05/2013 09:19
