Piriton for dogs?

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 29/05/2013 09:35

The Springer pup (well, I say pup, he's nearly two!) was worrying and scratching like mad yesterday after a walk in the very long grass. Just our luck - I suspect he has a grass or pollen allergy.

The Piriton website says it is okay for dogs but I wondered if anyone on here has tried it? It would save a fortune not having regular vet visits.

My friend uses it for her dog - her vet told her to, talk to yours about it and see if it's ok to just give as and when it's needed.

hellsbells99 · 29/05/2013 10:02

My sister uses it for her dog - on the advice of her vet.

fishybits · 29/05/2013 10:03

Yes, seem it used on a puppy stung by a bee.

topbannana · 29/05/2013 10:20

GingerDog has it, tis marvellous!
He is allergic to nettles and as a working cocker spends an inordinate amount of time yomping through them. It's cheap, easy and effective and we always carry them if we are out and about :)

My Dad's dog is on Piriton daily for skin complaints. I would check with the vet first, because there are a few different allergy meds with different active ingredient, and once you know which active ingredient you need, you can go to the chemist and get an own brand allergy medication for much cheaper. I think Superdrug do a suitable one.

MagratGarlik · 29/05/2013 11:28

Vet prescribed Priton for our dog when he went into anaphylactic shock (vet said it was the worst she'd seen). I don't know if the dog version is the same active ingredient as the human version. The pharmacist should be able to tell you though.

My vet told me to give Jas piriton when he had an allergy reaction to something on a walk. His paws were itchy and driving him mad. Can't remember the dose, though.

My itchy Staffie is on two, twice a day, as prescribed by the vet.

If you're going to buy them independently (which I wouldn't tbh) then please make sure that you don't give your dog Piriteze as it has ingredients unsuitable for canines.

Pure Piriton - or chlorphenamine - is the only thing suitable, so my vet tells me.

CatelynStark · 29/05/2013 16:21

Oh and the other things I use for my lad is the Dermacton range of products - bar shampoo, salve for itchy bits, spray for his coat, itchy ear cleaner. They are all brilliant and really worth a go if your dog is tearing him/herself to bits.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 29/05/2013 19:34

Thankyou all for your answers. I gave the Springer half a tablet of bog-standard Piriton with his tea and he's calmed down remarkably.

I will have a word with the vet - unfortunately they are of the school of 'bring him in for a chat and we'll charge you £40 just to say yep, it's okay'.

And thankyou, Catelyn for all those products. I'll certainly have a good look at them.

My westie has duff ears (the flop rather than stand up) so he often has a runny ear, when he's itchy I always give him a piriton.

Turniptwirl · 02/06/2013 20:18

My friend has used children's allergy medicine on all her boxers on the advice of her vet

EarlGreyTeabag · 02/06/2013 22:42

This advice has just come in very useful.

DH & DS have just returned from a walk with our young springer & all of them including the dog were being driven mad by midge bites.

I remembered seeing this thread this afternoon so suggested we give the springer a dose of piriton. DH & DS were Hmm especially when I said I got the info on Mumsnet!

Anyway, I gave her half a tablet a while ago & it's definitely worked - the mad scratching has stopped. DH & DS are very impressed Wink.

So thank you, wise Mumsnetters.

i have to give my border terrier the asda over counter anti histamine.. i dont know what it is in the garden hes allergic too but its getting ridiculous. he will be fine all week if only allowed out into the concrete but one afternoon out on the garden and his tummy is bright red and itchy again. he goes mad scratching..
even considering putting him in a tshirt or something to see if that stops him coming into contact with whatever hes allergic too!

CatelynStark · 02/06/2013 22:49

Turniptwirl - you've just reminded me that when my dog had his second bout of kennel cough (despite being vaccinated) my vet advised that I gave him children's Benylin.

He didn't like it much but it helped!

plainjaney · 03/06/2013 12:05

CatelynStark I used to give one of mine warm honey whenever he had a cough. I'm sure he could make himself cough just to get the treat though Hmm

My dog has allergies.very happy in herself but very itchy (not tearing herself to bits though),runny eyes and itchy ears.im trying to manage it without going to the vets as i can't see that she is doing any damage to herself.ive swapped her onto arden grange salmon and potato for sensitive dogs which I understand over a significant period will help her.my son has hay fever and takes loratadine which has the same ingredients as clariton. I'm now thinking it maybe worth trying a teaspoon of that a day.whats people's opinions on it?

WeimaranerLover77 · 04/06/2013 10:29

My dog suffers terribly from dust mite allergies. We give him Piriton on a regular basis and have tried to cut down on steroids that the vet has prescribed him as its not ideal for them to take on a regular basis, however he has got really bad again over the past few days so back on the stroids again :(
I have just ordered some spray off the website aromesse that CatelynStark suggested so hopefully this will help. The next route for me will be Atopica or immunology if this doesnt woprk

CatelynStark · 04/06/2013 13:57

I also tried the salmon oil and it did help to calm my boy's skin down, Charlotte.

WeimaranerLover - I really hope the spray works for your dog.
