Holiday nightmare :-( help me find somewhere for my dog to go please

We are going on holiday in the may half term. Eldest daughter usually stays at home and looks after dog/cats. This time she's coming with us.

Our dog is 9 with fear aggression, not biting etc but she will lunge, bark and get very upset if she sees another dog. I manage fine with her though.

She is also very submissive and slightly fearful of men Sad

There is no way in earth she can go in kennels!!

I can't find anyone we know to come and stay so am praying I can find a special boarding home for 5 days in surrey.... I will travel further if I have to.

Any ideas?

She is amazing with children and is pretty laid back with women.

Take a look here: www.dogfriendly.co.uk/ . It may have somewhere that fits the bill.

YourHandInMyHand · 04/05/2013 12:57

Have you looked at Petstay or if they are not in your area then a similar company?

colditz · 04/05/2013 13:06

Have you thought about offering a single mother some money to have her for the week?

A lot of people would love to do a trial run on having a dog, to see if they are cut out for the long run. This way, she gets to be on only dog in a home environment.

HotPanda · 04/05/2013 13:07

Have you asked the vet nurses in your surgery? Round my way a lot of them house sit to supplement income.

magnolia74 · 04/05/2013 13:22

Infant have someone come to my house as to be honest it's a bit chaotic with the cats (4 of them inc new kittens!!) so I would worry about a stranger in my house on top of the dog and then the cats Grin

I will look into all your suggestions and yes a single mum would be perfect but would need some experience with a special needs dog I think.

I can't use the dog friendly thing as our holiday is booked for euro disney.....

Who is looking after the cats? Couldn't they do the dog as well?

HopeForTheBest · 04/05/2013 14:20

Euro Disney has Pet Car Kennels actually there, would it be an option for her to stay there during the day while you're at the park?

clam · 04/05/2013 14:28

I don't like the idea of my 'mainstream' dog going to kennels either, as he's never been crated. The people who organise walking him when I'm at work also run a home-boarding service, whereby he goes to live with them in their house. This must surely be a reasonably widespread practice? It's not really any more expensive than kennels, but much nicer I would think.
They have the facilities to be able to isolate/separate certain dogs (with 'needs') from others for whatever reasons necessary.
My dog gets very excited when we get out his suitcase and he cottons on where he's going.

magnolia74 · 04/05/2013 14:28

No it wouldn't, she can't stay in kennels as it would distress her too much.
A friend is happy to come and stay with the cats but has never had dogs before...... I would worry the whole time

Clam that's what I need but most want well behaved dog socialised dogs which unfortunately mine isn't

OP posts:
clam · 04/05/2013 14:37

Why do you think that? Ask around - you might be surprised. Once, when I dropped mine off, there was a small dog in a separate area behind a stairgate in his own crate. The owner explained he was "special needs Toby" (affectionately said, I promise!!!) who didn't like other dogs or noise, so preferred to be on his own.

And my hound's not the best behaved, if I'm honest!

clam · 04/05/2013 14:41

Google 'home boarding for dogs.'

landrover · 04/05/2013 22:59

Sorry, have I misunderstood something here? You booked a holiday before sorting the dog out? Why would you do that?
I think that you have to ring around kennels and see if they could take a special needs dog on, but its late to book for half term hols as they will all be booked!
You could try any local dog walkers, they often take in dogs for holidays x

magnolia74 · 05/05/2013 14:15

Of course I didn't!!

We have someone coming to stay by I'm having a wobble about leaving her as its th first time ever she has been left without a family member being here.

But I did book a holiday before getting 2 new kittens which means the house is a little more chaotic and more procedures need to be in place to stop kittens getting outside and not leaving dog in same room if we go out etc.... Maybe a bit much for the person who is coming to stay that's all so I was thinking having the dog looked after separately will be easier and less of a worry.

Floralnomad · 05/05/2013 14:18

TBH it sounds like it may be easier to leave the dog at home and put the kittens in a cattery if its too much for the person staying to look after them all.

RedwingWinter · 05/05/2013 21:57

Some dog trainers will board dogs. Are there any good dog trainers near you that you could ask?

gymmummy64 · 05/05/2013 22:26

oh goodness I have never ever done this before on mumsnet but I simply can't believe what I've just read:

Have you thought about offering a single mother some money to have her for the week?

I will look into all your suggestions and yes a single mum would be perfect but would need some experience with a special needs dog I think

I am a single mother and I am absolutely totally gobsmacked by these comments

I've read outraged comments on MN zillions of times and have never felt the rage. now I have. Now I can see that there are at least 2 people in the world who feel that my single mother status renders me someone who might be employable, in certain situations, because she'll be desperate but only if experienced enough. Unbelievable.

gymmummy64 · 05/05/2013 22:27

And really truly upsetting

clam · 05/05/2013 22:36

Oh fgs, seriously?

gymmummy64 · 05/05/2013 22:40

yes, seriously

eslteacher · 06/05/2013 07:19

Wasn't it because the dog has a fear of men that single mother was suggested? Not because single mums are generally desperate, I think?

YourHandInMyHand · 06/05/2013 17:40

gymmummy I think you missed the point. I'm a single mum and read nothing that caused offence. A single mum was suggested as OP's dog is not good with men! Experience would be needed as this dog isn't a run of the mill dog. I really see nothing to get hett up about.

If I book with Petstay I'll be requesting a man free zone for my dog. Fortunately my single mum can have my dog.

lainiekazan · 07/05/2013 13:48

I think this has moved on to Single Mum Outraged at Suggestion of Dog Sitting, but may I suggest Home from Home Dog Boarding which is based in Surrey. Lovely people.
