Ponderosa Rescue near Leeds

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Ponderosa Rescue Kennels, aka Dog Care Association in Allerton Bywater near Leeds? Their website has a poor WOT score, and it does look very different to other rescues. For example, there is no mention of adoption policy or homecheck.

Yeah think they are pants. I visited and left with a dog in twenty mins once. Didn't know the difference between rescues then. The only note on the working dog was 'needs walking'. Fab dog though.

Thanks, Soupa (super name, btw). I like a plain, no-nonsense website but theirs is positively bald, notwithstanding the scary WOT score that implies it's dangerous.

I don't know the charity at all but - they are a registered charity and unfortunately, many smaller rescues have absolutely dismal websites. Things are improving slowly on that front, but it's not uncommon for rescues to be vague online about the adoption process or what's involved in a homecheck (something I find very frustrating).

I don't routinely use WOT scores when looking at rescue websites and wouldn't necessarily see this as a problem. I certainly wouldn't reject them on that basis alone.

Looking at their returns on the CC website, they have been going since 1987, which is a long time for many smaller rescues, have filed all relevant accounts and have a modest turnover, again typical of a smaller rescue. They don't yet have any reviews on here but again, that's typical of smaller rescues.

They did used to have a terrible reputation. That was about 10/15 years ago, but I haven't geard much since.

GranToAirMissiles · 23/04/2013 20:47

Thanks for looking that up, Scuttlebutter.

Gran, are you looking for a rescue in that area? If you let us know what you are looking for, there are a number of people on here who can point you in the right direction.

Small rescues build up reputations over a long period of time - I will happily criticise any organisation when there is a policy or facts/actions that I don't agree with, and have done so on here(and will say clearly why) but I would be hugely reluctant to speculatively raise concerns in a very public forum over an issue that is secondary to the care they offer to their dogs.

I look at a lot of rescue websites and sadly I wouldn't say that Ponderosa's was anywhere near the worst. Sad Many of the smaller rescues run entirely on voluntary efforts and usually the most work goes into the care of the dogs - the website is often much further down the list and not every rescue can easily access the skills needed for a decent site.

Tbh I think they are at the lower end of standards. Certainly they were but someone recently was saying they were no better.

GranToAirMissiles · 24/04/2013 01:00

Yes I'm looking for a reputable rescue in the Leeds area.

the best one in Leeds is dogs trust they have a fantastic center

Soupa · 24/04/2013 10:44

White rose rescue fosters and seems to have a lovely attitude.

needastrongone · 24/04/2013 16:42

DogsTrust Leeds is close to me, consequently, in the village where we live there's lots of rescue dogs. And, many folk volunteer by raising money and dog walking etc. Same manager since it opened. Very well run and professional outfit. Obviously slightly 'clinical' in the sense that it's large but super after care and support.

I had a bad experience with White Rose rescue in that they promised me a dog, homechecked me, I spent ages with the fosterer and dog and then they gave the dog to somebody else after I had told the kids (friend of a fosterer or something, sort of pulled rank iyswim?) but agee that they only have a few dogs and all fostered which is great.

Twattybollocks · 25/04/2013 07:32

Dont go there, they are shit. A friend of mine rehomed a dog from them, ideal family pet, housetrained etc. he was terrified of kids and still pees in the house on occasion 5 years later.

BabeRuthless · 25/04/2013 14:39

Twatty - Which rescue do you mean? Live round this way & looking at getting a rescue after our holiday, really want to get this right.

Twattybollocks · 25/04/2013 17:03

It was the ponderosa one at Allerton bywater just out of castleford. Whereabouts are you? We are in ackworth nr pontefract

GranToAirMissiles · 25/04/2013 23:04

By White Rose I think you mean Yorkshire Rose? (should be white, obviously, but for some reason isn't).

Twatty - We're about ten miles from Leeds. Ds is six and a lot of dogs trust dogs aren't suitable for younger children so I've been looking into smaller rescues.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/04/2013 08:29

Depends which side of Leeds you are and how far you are prepared to travel but Mayflower sanctuary in Doncaster is my nearest and they seemed helpful when we spoke to them. They get some lovely dogs too.

timmytanktop · 13/09/2014 20:52

Bought dog from Ponderosa within three days had to pay £80 to have it put down. Attacked 85 year old woman in her bed! they told us it was nervous!
