My poor lovely collie

has got a prolapsed disc....

she was limping a bit yesterday, but not enough to make me overly concerned, thought she may have a bruised pad (couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it)

then when my dh got up this morning, he woke me and said she wouldn't go out with him like usual. (she sleeps at the side of the bed and usually goes with him in the mornings at about half 4 - he milks cows) but she comes back quickly (she's more of a family dog)

When I got up, she couldn't get up
she was trying, but it was as if she had lost the use of her back end

so i got the dc to school and took her to the vets.

They said 3 options - surgery (which just isn't feasible for us to even consider) and may not work anyway.

or give anti inflammortories for a week or 2 and hope she recovers with some rest and nursing ( though very slim chance )

I am so so sad.... and she knows it too bless her. They have said she is feeling no pain ( she is basically paralysed and also on the painkillers/anti inflammatories) so we just have to keep our fingers crossed and wait and see.

anyone had the same thing happen? (hoping for miracle stories!)

update!

she is still with us, and week on week showing small progress.

She definitely flinched this morning when the vet pinched her toes

Vet really pleased with her overall condition and told us to continue what we are doing for now as her quality of life still seems good.

long term prognosis still guarded, but can't stop trying for her.

How old is she?

I too have seen a dog recover from this and it is quite a long drawn out process but they have got there in the end. So if you are seeing slight improvement I would probably leave it a bit longer before you make any decisions as I have heard it is a slow process, but it sounds like she is going in the right direction, fingers crossed for you!

I've got a collie cross, must of been awful to go through this, so glad she's on the mend :)

Only just saw this, but my previous dog, a collie x got a prolapsed disc at about the same age. I came home one day and and to let him out, but he couldn't get himself up . The vet told us he had to rest and we should prepare for him to be PTS - we were devastated. However, after two weeks of complete rest and anti-inflammatories he started to re BG sin the use of his back end. The vet was amazed, but he had another 7 years of life after that (he lived to 16 years old).

I hope your collie recovers too.

good news is yesterday when the vet tested her pain reflex (by pinching her toes) she definitely reacted and flinched and tried to pull her legs away - so definitely some regain of feeling
