new husky puppy advice

mouses · 31/03/2013 23:56

On fri (29th) i bought home my gorgeous 14wk old husky cross. he's dad is wolf mum a husky. he is 14wks old.

he was fed on tripe, which i have to put in the microwave ( from frozen) for 14mins mixed with mixer biscuits. Im weaning him over to barf / raw adding in a few natures menu nuggets and taking away some tripe. now he is eating the nuggets then tripe but leaving the mixer?

is it ok to change him over to nuggets or should it be mince, chicken wings / portions? also am i going right way about it? was thinking of the free flow tripe from natures menu too??
aswell, how much and often should he be eating? he weighs 13.6kg quite petite in size (was told he was runt)

when reading up on the breed i was bracing myself for a challenge as i read they need their energy burned off, but this little one is so laid back Hmm he sleeps so much? and after a short 10mins toy session he needs another rest?

he cant go out yet he hasnt had his jabs which the breeder told me he doesnt need until his 5mths due to his breed? Confused although im calling vets on tues to check.

all help is appreciated thanks

OMG there is a whole new set of badly-bred 'designer cross-breeds' that people will charge a fortune for.

Thanks for the link to that site Candycrush. It is very depressing.

Looking at the page CC linked to, it's easy to see how someone could think they were buying a dog that is part wolf. Just cross a Czech wolfdog with another random dog, refer to the Czech wolfdog as a wolfdog (thus implying recent wolf heritage, which there isn't) and ta-da, people will think they are buying a wolf 'hybrid'.

The Czech wolfdog is a very beautiful breed of dog. Wolves were used in the creation of the breed but not since. There's a page here that explains the difference between Czech wolfdogs and a wolfdog.

Orkwolf · 01/04/2013 21:36

further to that defra report in 2000,
www.orkwolf.co.uk/index.php/wolfdogs/licensing.html

It is also to be noted that the wolf content made up in the Saarloos was from 1918 and in the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog in the mid to late 1980s.
As you say there are breeders who have introduced more recent wolf blood from smuggled in wolves, there are also a whole heap of back yard breeders selling via misrepresenting wolfdogs/hybrids that are Husky, Malamute, Tamaskan type.
At the end of the day, the wolfdog is a harder breed and requires dedication but in terms of aggression to people they dont even show up, ironically its the Labs, Collies etc that show up as high ranking in bite, dog attacks, there are obviously hundreds of thousands of them, compared to a wolfdog.
The American wolfdogs {hybrid} are a different kettle of fish altogether!

Orkwolf · 01/04/2013 21:39

Most of those are old adverts Candy, there are 3 breeders including me on there, A1 has just started breeding

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/04/2013 23:27

I met an alleged wolf hybrid last year. It was absolutely gigantic. A stunning blue/grey colour all over, and very long. I cant remember what its owner said it was crossed with, but she definitely said timber wolf. It was a beautiful dog, but I just dont understand the appeal!

GrannyWolf · 02/04/2013 20:50

I help orkwolf out with the rescue and help out on his owners website. I've got 3 Czech crosses and a hybrid pup and ive fostered a fair few oc these types. I'm rspca registered as a fosterer and home checker for wolfdogs as well as a few more of the 'big' rescues. I'm disturbed to see the amount of absolute MIS information on this thread.
Firstly Mouses hunny, please contact me or orkwolf. We can and will help you. Pet Plan for insurance? No afraid not. There's only TWO insurers the best being Exotics Direct, we can even get you a discount if you join our members club.
There's only about four people on here who seem to have a clue what they are talking about.
Firstly DO NOT take it to a vet stating its a wolf cross. If they think it is illegal they can report you and the pup will probably be destroyed.... Or passed to us. I'm sure I know the breeder involved by your description, if its him, you may have a Czech x Mal.... Possibly. But not a hybrid. A Czech cross Mal is not a great combination due to completely opposing social drives. But with SUPPORT, help and education. Plus an army of owners and volunteers up and down the country, it's not an impossible task. Please contact us hunny. We wanna see you keep your pup and learn to be a fab Wolfy owner xxx

tabulahrasa · 02/04/2013 23:32

To be fair - I don't think that many people have wolf experience...

I'm still hoping the OP comes back.

I've spoken to Mouses privately and offered correct help and support and education, which she is pleased about.
The great big huge grey/blue thing Saggyoldclothcatpuss talks of sounds more like a Mal x GSD to me, I had one here as a foster, made my Czechs look like small terriers. Amazing though how more people mistake a husky type mix for a wolf, over a Wolfdog. For a start there's about 7-8 easily spotted physical attributes. Number one being.... IT'S HEAD IS THE WRONG SHAPE lol.
Anyways, mouses is getting some decent advise and we will hopefully be able to tell her exactly what he is seeing as though his breeder sounds like a right liar.

shufflebum · 03/04/2013 05:06

Great news! I had been lurking with trepidation, really glad she's getting some experienced help.

Punkatheart · 03/04/2013 06:44

I am glad too.

I think the waters are being muddied by people charging more, depending on how much 'wolf' is in the dog. Dubious, hard to prove and giving Defra logistical nightmares.

I do obviously have a lot of experience of actual wolves and I shake my head at the 'Oooh it's so cute.' Some of these dogs have to have special licences and have to kept outside as a stipulation of these. They are not family dogs and have to have a lot of exercise. I really don't want to see attacks by these dogs in the news. If people exercise caution and do adequate research, only go to approved and ethical breeders, all should be well.

I am very concerned though about the illegal activities of some unscrupulous dog breeders- none of which are here.

I will continue to help keep wolves in the wild but also love the ambassador wolves too (uk.wolf.org) but I do know that wolves who mate with dogs cause a lot of headaches for conservationists. Did you know that you should never pat a wolf on the head? Knowledge with anything with wild genes is crucial. These dogs need research and forethought.

God almighty, the idea of anything containing even a minuscule percentage of 'wolf' being kept as a pet makes my mind boggle to the sun and back again - total lunacy.

Floralnomad · 03/04/2013 13:18

I'm glad grannywolf that the OP is getting the help she needs , its a shame that there are people like that 'breeder' out there . It would be interesting if either yourself or the OP could come back and let us know what this puppy actually turns out to be a X of, and how old as TBH there is no guarantee that that info was correct either .

lurcherlover · 03/04/2013 15:49

While I'm glad mouses is getting support, it doesn't take away the fact that she is still a complete novice dog-owner, with a pup from unknown parents, but ones that certainly have specialist requirements, and she has young children. Whatever support is being offered, it won't be there 24/7. Ultimately I still feel the pup would be better off being rehomed with someone with practical experience of these breeds and that mouses would be better starting afresh with a breed that doesn't have such special needs.
