what to do about idiot planning backyard breeding?

Said idiots have decided to get another dog and breed for profit.

What should a worried relative do to stop them please?

There is nothing you can do to physically stop them. But I have a story that you can use as a heard from a friend. Bitch delivers 8 pups safely, but then requires c-section for last 4 bitch has cardiac arrest immediately post surgery vets and nurses work on her for 30 mins resuscitate her, but over the next 24 hours it becomes clear that she has a brain injury due to lack of oxygen and it is decided to euthanise her. Owners are left with £750 bill and hand raising 12 pups which over next few weeks they loose 3 of. We are really nice vets and they are paying this bill off gradually others do not do this. If you breed you must be prepared to loose the bitch and all the pups and still have a huge bill to pay.

You can also remind them that if any of the puppies develop an inherited health problem then the new owners can demand a refund at any time, so skipping the health tests is pretty stupid.

Ask them if they realise that they'll have to spend at least 4 hours a day (much more for the last couple of weeks) for 8 weeks looking after the puppies, starting socialisation, working on bite inhibition and cleaning up after them...

There's loads of other issues with just throwing any two dogs together for puppies - but if they're after a quick buck then you'll probably be most effective pointing out that it doesn't make you money.

Are you (or the would-be breeders) on Facebook? There's a group on there called Orphaned Puppies. A read through that should be enough to put them off. I was added to the group for some reason but I left - it was so heartbreaking seeing the bitches that lost their lives in whelp. Good luck, it's a tough one.

Hope you have some success Nagoo - I have cross breeds, sadly also sometimes called "designer" breeds. I elected to have cross breeds for various reasons, but have been shocked by the number in rescue, and the number of people setting themselves up as back garden breeders with a view to making what they think is easy money. It isn't easy money at all - not if done properly. My spaniel had a litter many years ago, gorgeous experience all round, but she had 7 puppies, and only the first was delivered normally. The rest were breach. Our vet sat with me and the dog from 1 am to 4 am to make sure all was well, and we were lucky she didn't need a c section, and that she and the puppies were all well. You can imagine, any "profit" went to the vet. I planned to have a litter with my first cross breed, and keep a puppy (having retired, yippee) but once I'd googled the breed I discovered so many being abandoned/rehomed, I had my bitch spayed. I do wish there weren't so many back street breeders and puppy farms around

Just tell them they are idiots and point them in the direction of the local rescue centre. Or give them figures on the number of unwanted dogs put down every year. I doubt they will care though - people like this never do.

With all the health tests stud fees worming possible c sections and vet checks kc registrations and various bits for puppies . Bedding food ect it normally costs us about £2500 + to raise a litter to 10weeks !! tell her this as it normally scares people off. No we dont cut corners as i beleive in doing the best for my dogs and have been doing it a long time, we have waiting lists for our puppies but even so sometimes we have puppies for even longer. As they have no experience it may be difficult to sell there puppies and will they like us be willing to take a dog back at any point in its life ???? You are sensible show her this thread !

I hope that your relatives manage to educate them! We have a KC reg'd Alaskan Malamute Pedigree, and I did post here for advice before we got him, or even once we had and got some fantastic advice on what he'd need, feed, training, vet costs, whether to show him, etc....

If they're not bothered about the welfare of the bitch, puppies or the amount of dogs in rescue centres how about money...

In receipt of benefits - the sale of puppies will be income.
HMRC - tax return please, you are breeding for profit.

Whilst not in the big league of the banks, this would be an arse for form filling etc...
