Very naughty 14.5 yr old doddery lab managed to find it in himself to steal a load of food off the worktop earlier despite it being pushed back and I realised he'd had three quarters of a 100g bar of dark fairtrade chocolate - he's done it loads of times before - he once stole an entire box of after eights - anyone elses dog get away with chocolate stealing?!

My previous dog scoffed loads of Easter eggs once. Didn't do a thing, well apart from the fact he got a right telling off.

I recall my childhood Labrador eating loads of chocolate - again fine. Apparently certain dogs are highly allergic but not all. Think mine will have tried some given her noted thieving skills.

Male boxer went in my work bag, rootled out a superdrug carrier bag, got that open and ate the family bag of minstels and two family size bars of galaxy.

No sickness, no tummy upset, nothing!

He has also eaten without any side effects, a whole lemon and a whole mango and last night ate a piece of fresh ginger.

My dog ate a tub of cocoa powder and had to be rushed to the vets. She was very sick.

The other dog ate a huge bag of raisins, before I knew they were bad for dogs, and despite some spectacular diarrhoea full of rehydrated grapes, was very quickly fine.

Quick update- he was fine in the end, after a bit of diarrhoea and some revolting smells he was back to normal! Chocolate is now banned from the house as he always seems to sniff it out!

Mine cruelly stole my advent calendar from the work top one year on the third of December and was fine.

I also opened a box of milk tray and left it on the sofa, only to come back and find she had eaten the top layer. No sickness, no poorly tummy, nothing!

My dog will eat ANYTHING and he has never been ill from it. He is a stealer. Any food left lying and he will steal it. He has been known to open the fridge and I have come in to carnage on many occasions! He is a naughty weimaraner.

He has eaten a whole box of guylian chocs. At least 2 advent calendars.

He once ate an entire block of butter. That cannot have tasted nice but he ate it anyway.

He is so good in all other ways - but around food it is like he is starved.

sMost milk chocolate contains only a small amount of cocoa solids, but dark chocolate can be very dangerous, particularly in the case of smaller dogs who only need to eat a very small quantity to exceed the toxic dose.

A lot of people on this thread seem think that it just causes digestive upset. In fact it can cause a range of effects including coma. It's much more sensible to seek veterinary advice to work out if the dose is harmful, then induce vomiting if required, than to sit at home waiting to see if a dog becomes ill. Once the signs of toxicity become apparent it may be too late.

So just because your dog has a "cast iron stomach", don't be complacent - it offers no protection I'm afraid :(

it is to do with the cocoa content rather than chocolate as such

a 100g 70% bar would depend on what weight your dog was as to what effect it would have

i would go to vets as well i am afraid

my older dog had a really frightening gastric experience prior to christmas and i was so glad i had rang the vet for advice (she had too be admitted for two days - from eating too many DOG treats!)

Well, I don't know about "get away with," as it cost me 200 quid at the OOH vet! He was only a puppy at the time though, and had snaffled half a dozen home-made truffles with high cocoa content.

I would never deliberately give a dog chocolate but my collie x springer managed to access a whole chocolate orange at the back of high dresser during the night. Luckily she was fine but we were very very careful with chocs after that .... always in cupboard.

Howeveer got caught out this xmas when soemone gave me a small box shaped pressie ( not usual chocolate box shape) that seemed very solid and as I recently diagnosed insulin resistant did not consider she would have give me chocs. We dressed the xmas tree then went out on boxing day to see family ......... only to have phone call form a dofferent friend who had gone in to let dogs out for us...... telling me pooch had opened my pressie to find (and eat ) some very expensive choc truffles eeeekkk

again she was fine.

I do not want tempt fate and try to see if she is tolerant rather than lucky !

glad your lab was ok.

When my dog ate the Advent Calendars, I posted on here in a frenzy & someone put a link to types of choc/weights of dog & what should be OK.

Fairy-the tiniest amount of cheese gives my dog the runs!

But I'm guessing that it's the lactose?

The danger of chocolate for dogs isn't a digestive one - that they'll more than likely easily recover from. Poisoning from chocolate can cause seizures and neurological damage.

From my vet I understand it as, some dogs are fatally allergic to chocolate, most are not. To be safe they tell everyone to not give it to dogs incase their dog is allergic.

I took my boxer to the vet after he ate about 100g of 85% cocoa dark chocolate and luckily he was completely fine.

My dog managed the great escape from the kitchen a few days before xmas, found a shit load of chocolate (four selection boxes and a huge toblerone) that were well hidden under my bed...)

We got home about half an hour later to find him really not very well, badly distended stomach and just basically sick.

Took him to the OOH vet who gave him an injection that made him instantly and violently sick. Luckily he was fine apart from not feeling himself the next day. Choc hangover. He's a big lad so not a diddy little thing and it didn't do him any good at all.

Lesson learned, my hiding place wasn't good enough. I'd personally get the dog checked because poisoning isn't immediate.

DP's Cavalier ate a v. large bar of Galaxy and apart from a dodgey tum she was fine.

our 12 month old cockapoo just found a small snickers bar in the garden, the builders must have left it. He was eating it when I saw him. An hour on, he seems fine - scary though. I am keeping an eye on him, and hoping he has some of the spaniel cast iron stomach that a spaniel I had years ago had. She ate anything and everything. Easter was her favourite time of year for stealth stealing chocolate, but she was never ill. Also, the news that chocolate could kill dogs hadn't reached me or any of my family at that time so we didn't know to panic.

yes, my bastard puppy has eaten three so far - little fucker - I am not amused. This is over 3 days. And no, we have no been negligent - I have been as careful as I can about leaving them out of his reach. One he stole from my daughter's bedroom when he nipped through the stair gate and was up there like a whippet (he is not allowed access to u/s). The other he took from the table as my son was eating it and the last he took by, presumably, standing on teh armchair and getting it from teh fucking book shelf which is around 5 feet off the ground. he has had no apparent ill effects other than a swift whack on the arse and being hollered at for it. I find his food stealing antics very frustrating. He never stops

DH is just on his way back from the vets, and ÂŁ100 poorer, after taking black lab to be sorted after eating a discarded (triple chocolate!!!) muffin. There is no way chocolate is being banned from this house - I need it!
