Cockers, Springers, thinking of another addition!

Springer puppy is 5 months. We love him tons and he's a good puppy. We spend tons of time with him and particularly love the training and walking. Dh now says he would never be without a dog again. He's bi-polar and the change in him is incredible.

Dh especially fancies getting another dog in future, while our first dog is still young. Not yet though I stress, would prefer to get this one fully trained etc. however, the thought process is there.

We can afford it financially, have the space and the time. This aspect I am fine with.

Dh fancies another Springer. I would be perfectly happy with this but love the look of Cockers too.

Clearly, I know that our breed needs a lot of exercise and stimulation. Do Cockers need more? Less? Similar? Would having two high energy dogs even be a good idea?

I also fancy a vizsla but not sure I am up to one!!!

Any advice appreciated.

I have a cocker. I wouldn't be without him :). He is a lovely dog, lively natured and very handsome. I don't think he needs as much exercise as a springer. He has lots of springer pals and whilst he loves running with them, they run rings round him :)

I frequently get stopped and told how lovely he is x

I think a working cocker would be similar in terms of needs... To be honest, some working cockers I know are bigger than some of the small springers I know, so depends on the dog. I have a mix of the two (non designer). She came from a working family where they had mixed a springer in a few generations back to lengthen the legs of the dogs they were breeding... She keeps up with all the dogs I know, bar greyhounds and whippets Grin

Don't know if it's anywhere near to you, but Second Chance Rescue in Derbyshire have lots of spaniels at the moment...

We have two springers and wouldn't be without them.

Personally, I wouldn't want to have a single dog again. They keep each other company, they play together and often sleep curled up together. I do understand though that not everyone is as lucky as we have been and that some dogs just don't get on.

You are doing the right thing in waiting until DDog1 is a little bit older and trained.

If you have the space and can afford another, I would say go for it Smile

We have a cocker puppy - a show cocker. He is quite energetic but not as much as the springers or working cockers I see around, and I think might develop couch potato tendencies when older!

Thanks all.

Just to confirm I don't feel up to another dog yet! I want to put the time and energy into Ddog1 before getting another. We would like him to gain his KC Gold etc before training another one up.

However, we would prefer to be on the list for a planned litter etc from a responsible breeder as we did this time (if we don't go down the resuce route anyway) and this takes a bit of research, so worth tentatively thinking about now.

Ok, so looks like a Cocker wouldn't be any more work than a Springer anyway, I really didn't know if there was a difference in energy levels and was happy for honest answers.

Smile
