What kind of lead do you use?

A slip lead or a clip lead? Or -god forbid- an extendable one?

I use a 5ft clip lead.

Well, I don't actually have a dog yet (she comes to live with us a week today Grin) but I have both a slip lead and a clip lead (haven't measured them but assume 5 / 6ft).

The rescue recommended a slip lead to start with to keep her safe and secure, then I can move to the clip when she's settled in and not likely to leg it.

I also have a 10m training lead in case we need to do some recall work.

Wouldn't have an extendable one to be honest, they look like an accident waiting to happen to me.

A bog standard 3 foot clip on one.

I am waiting for an extendable one being delivered at the moment though Grin you'll all hate me with my big dog on an extendable lead, lol.

Scuttlebutter · 14/03/2013 09:03

We have clip on velvet leads. Very hard wearing, beautifully soft on the hands and washable. We use 6ft for everyday walks and we have a couple of 3ft ones which we use for things like vet visits or anywhere similar that requires close work.

Also have a stock of nylon and some older leather ones for transporting rescue dogs.

And yes, when I am Pope, Wink I will excommunicate anyone using one of those extendables. They are lethal.

PersonalClown · 14/03/2013 09:10

Both dogs are on Ezydog Vario 4 leads.

They can be used in variety of ways. A 6ft long lead, a 3ft lead, a 1.5 traffic lead (ie to keep them close and under control near roads) and a slip lead/collar if needed.

So much easier to deal with. Lets the buggers roam a bit till we get to the fields to let them loose!

Oh and they are easy to use. Just pull on rings and the lead changes length.

I use a clip lead attached to a harness

We use a gen-con, quite short and gives us control of her head so she doesn't try to rip other dogs ears off pull

tabulahrasa · 14/03/2013 10:03

I nearly killed myself with a long line - so I'm going to try and extendable one...it might hit me, but at least I don't have to contend with having to pick it up, lol.

Monster puppy hasn't been offlead in four months, he's only eight months old and his leg now has the allclear to give him five minutes offlead - but his recall doesn't exist and he's not ok to play with dogs yet. So it's for practising recall with and so that I can get to him to put him back on his real one if another dog or person comes along when I'm in the fields.

It's supposed to hold 75kg and he's only 35kg, so other than tripping me up (and that's always a possibility without it anyway, lol) we should be fine.

MothershipG · 14/03/2013 10:08

Can I remind those of you using extendables that they need to be attached to a harness not a collar! Can't count the number of dogs I've seen nearly throttle themselves! Confused

And please don't let your dog wrap themselves around people's legs, friction burns are very painful!

Floralnomad · 14/03/2013 11:26

We have a halti training lead and an extendable . Mine gets walked on a Doxlock harness and I use whichever lead is appropriate for where we are going and what we will be doing . I used to have a 16 m long line ,but he's allowed off lead now .

needastrongone · 14/03/2013 11:43

We have a normal collar and lead and working very hard on walking without pulling. Vast improvements, especially when no distractions but still a work in progress.

Our trainer has recommended a slip lead but wants us to bring it with us when we start the KC Bronze on Saturday as he says there's a correct way to use/wear them safely and would prefer to show us but they do allow greater control? I don't know about this as this is our first dog. Assume he knows what he's doing as he has prizes from Crufts for agility work!

SpicyPear · 14/03/2013 11:47

Mainly 2m fleece leads from Dog Games. They have a ring on the handle so they can be used as 1m as well. Also have a couple of 1m Timberwolf leads made of climbing rope for vet visits, town etc.

issey6cats · 14/03/2013 13:43

bog standard webbing lead and collar as my hound is an older lady never pulls and is too slow to run off if shes off lead

HelgatheHairy · 14/03/2013 14:41

I have an extendable attached to a harness attached to a golden retriever. LOVE it, I can have it extended on quite paths so he can wander into undergrowth and sniff and if around people have him next to me.

Twattybollocks · 15/03/2013 07:06

I use a short 1.5 inch wide leather one with brass studs to stop her chewing through it. It's about 2ft 6, clips to her harness. Don't use a longer one as if she gets up any sort of momentum when she sees a squirrel/rabbit she can pull me off my feet quite easily. she has a big leather staffy harness too, when she has a squirrel moment she's quite capable of strangling herself trying to get to it.
