How to persuade whippet puppy to wee outside?

PariahHairy · 13/03/2013 22:19

Or indeed even stay outside for longer than 10 seconds, we have had him since Sunday and obviously it's very cold, but outside he no likey, even with a coat.

He is titchy so it's understandable, but would like to get proper toilet training underway.

Also he is apparently whippet x saluki x greyhound with mostly whippet, when people ask what he is what do I say, he's not really a lurcher so whippet cross???

He sounds gorgeous ...I love whippity dogs. Well I used to put my dog outside for a wee and she would look at me like I was crazy and come straight back in. This after a whole night! She has a bladder of steel. Not sure what to suggest though-you'd think if they really need to go they will go.

poachedeggs · 13/03/2013 22:31

OMG that will be an amazing ccross, he will be gorgeous and stubborn and aloof and supercilious but we'll overlook those because he'll be beeeeeautiful you lucky thing! I bet he's supercute!

Food rewards for crossing the threshold might help - if he sets foot outside, give him a piece of cooked chicken. It only needs to be pea-sized and he'll soon be more motivated to go out. Also, always go with him and make it fun by having a play or just making sure you head out in a positive, engaging way so he wants to accompany you.

poachedeggs · 13/03/2013 22:33

I wasn't being mean by the way - I have my own Saluki x and she's the apple of my eye, but she's a thrawn and intractable creature!

PariahHairy · 13/03/2013 22:41

He is totally adorable, I think he was a bit skinny on coming to us, but is filling out already, he seems to really like me and sleeps in the bed I think a crate might help matters.

Good tip poached about the chicken just for being outside, I did have chicken, but I was waiting for when he did something to give it to him, maybe just start on the being outside thing and take him straight out when he wakes up? Is that a good plan?

Could really do with this winter weather buggering off though. We have started training with sit etc, but we are still workingon the peeing on the puppy pad lol, he will get much chicken.

I don't rate puppy pads. It's confusing for a dog to be taught to pee indoors then have to be taught to pee outdoors. So I'd say chuck them and just bribe him to be outside.

He doesn't need to do anything other than show a behaviour you want to encourage before you reward him - reward calmness, going outside, peeing, lying in bed, chewing appropriate toys etc. You don't just have to reward stuff you've made/coaxed him to do, it's good to reward everything he does that's good and desirable!

We're having similar problems with our pup and she's a husky! I think she's just soft though, she can't be too cold with her fur.

She has started to come out a bit more if I go out with her but she's started mooching about outside for 10 minutes, coming in and weeing on the carpet! The chicken idea is a good one.

PariahHairy · 13/03/2013 22:49

Also can anyone recommend a good food? He came to us on bakers complete puppy, and was munching a little bit on it, but not much, so I probably wrongly decided to add just a little bit of wet food.

Now he gulps down any of the wet food mixed in and ignores the kibble, if I put down just kibble he has a few bits then ignores it eek, I have fucked up there haven't I? I want him to get the best nutrition, but also enjoy his food, was going to ask the vet tomorrow because he is going for his shots/health check but I don't know if vets are pressured to offer certain brands.

Thanks for your replies btw.

Oh thanks for that poached, I will put that into practiceSmile.

Baker's is the only food I ever tell people not to feed. It's shite. Do talk to your vet. Although some recommend particular brands, as long as you're feeding a complete puppy food at the moment that's all that really matters.

PariahHairy · 13/03/2013 23:03

I did have a feeling it was shite, he was properly too skinny when we got him poor love, although dp went to choose him and he was the smallest. I am quite keen on a raw food diet but not sure when that can be implemented.

Will see what the vet says.

Our dog is on a raw food diet Pariah, we started it at 12 weeks as she had awful runs from kibble. The runs stopped almost straight away and she loves her food now.

Whippoorwhill · 14/03/2013 13:07

My baby spaniel cross is 8 weeks and went on to raw straight away. She had weirdly bloated tummy (not worms, she's been wormed) but was pretty skinny and smelled very strange when we got her. Four days on raw and she smells nice, her tummy looks normal and she's filling out nicely.

She won't go out to wee either. :)

Greenkit · 14/03/2013 14:46

I just keep pointing outside and say 'wee wees' I wont let her in till she did one, which she always did after about 5 or so mins. Now They both go when asked (although sometimes my older whippet, now 5yrs, will cock his leg and look at me as if to say I have done it.

PariahHairy · 18/03/2013 00:58

Still not having much success with the toilet raining tbh, he is just too quick for me, will invest in a crate soon. He has been to the vet and been wormed, he is now on hills diet vet thingy and is looking lovely, shots tomorrow eek.

You need to be going outside with him every hour, plus after meals, sleeps and any time he sniffs or circles. It sounds tremendously arduous, but in fact if you do this you have so many opportunities to reward him for toileting in the right place they learn extremely quickly.

It's important you get this going ASAP because they quickly develop substrate preference and this means they learn what surface to pee on - you don't want him to learn that carpet = toilet! If he's really unhappy about the weather, you may have to up your game from the chicken to something smellier.
