Anyone got experience of Hills I/D dog food?

Lab has had runny tummy for a week or so now and vet wants me to put him on Hill I/D as it is bland and for sensitive stomachs. He is currently on JWB plus a bit of Nature diet. He had been fine but when the runs started and they had a sample tested the vet diagnosed Giardia and we had 3 days of Panacur but no improvement. Happy to go with vet advice usually but just wondered if I am being sold something that they get commission on?

Hills is pretty poor quality food. And vets do get commission on it. I wouldn't bother with it. I'd give your dog something like white chicken meat, rice, tuna fish and a bit of natural yoghurt. Then slowly mix the normal food back in.

Have you done a three day pooled faecal Sample to prove the giardia has gone? Giardia can be a tricky little parasite and can take quite a bit more than 3 days of panacur to shift it. It would also be worth several things like corona virus on the faecal before reaching for a prescription diet.
Just to correct earlier post vet practices do mark up hills food to make a small profit just as any other business does with any product individual vets do not get commission on selling the food.

I wouldn't use Hills either. Invariably recommended by vets but actually, plain chicken and rice with some natural yoghourt (as suggested by Abraid) has always sorted out upset doggy stomachs. If the Panacur hasn't improved things, perhaps get a further dose?

I feed all my dogs raw, except one. He has to have Hills I/D as it is the only food that he can tolerate. SO although people are very keen to slag off prescription food ( can I say I was one of them) it can sometimes be the only option.

Vets do not get commission on selling the food and our vet told us the website to get it from directly - what he did tell me was how the food had been adapted to be tolerated by dogs with very sensitive stomach or IB disease.

Yoghurt can be the worst food to give to dogs with IB disease and as these dogs can drop weight so quickly there is a real danger that this can become life threatening.

Chicken and rice will not give the dogs the nutrients it will need long term, okay for an odd day but not possible long term.

I am not a fan of any form of processed food but it can literally be a life saver for some dogs.

My 10 month golden is on Hills I/d permanently due to his stomach. Had tried all the "better" foods but this is the only one that doesn't give him runny poop.

He first went on it at about 4 months for a week, then at 6 months for 2 weeks and permanently at 8 months. He's still as lively as ever and growing like a weed!

Hills gives my dog terrible diarrhoea. When he had runs in jan, we starved him for 24 hours then gave him tinyeals of plain chicken and boiled rice. He was back to normal in about a week.

we used hills i/d after severe gastritis and tbh it was a godsend

Owllady · 06/03/2013 14:10

should say we had the tins, not dry food

punter · 06/03/2013 22:02

thanks all for your input. At the moment I am not going onto the Hills food in case his tummy calms down by itself. Just giving his basic food and very few treats for training. This morning we had a 'normal' poop and I think tonight as well although it was a bit dark to tell! Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

We'vs had to give ZD, which is even more hypoallergenic, for ages now and giant pup will probably be on it or something similar for life. It doesn't 100 percent solve the problems but it has made it more manageable. For a 30kg dog it does get rather pricey though.
Sadly we've never successfuy identified exactly what he can and can't tolerate, so raw is off the cards for us.
B12 boosters also helped during Giant Pups worst bouts, following the full rigmarole of blood and poo tests.
