Is there such a thing as a (even slightly!) longer lasting soft toy?

Pretty much says it all in the title really!

I have a 7 month old pup. He isn't much of a chewer but his favourite things a soft toys which he rips to shreds to bits in a day. He literally stands on them and shreds them. Anyone found anything that could see a week out?

No fan, I haven't.

Have you considered a bulk purchase from a charity store to save some money? We are rapidly running out of cuddlies the dc are happy to sacrifice!

Floralnomad · 27/02/2013 20:04

Not in this house , even the ultra tough ,double stitched ones last about an hour before they need surgery . The ones that don't have any stuffing are useless as well they just look like a shredded bit of furry material in 10 minutes.

The charity shops can only sell ones with a CE safety label in. Go and make friends with your local one and chat to the ladies about taking away some of the ones they cant sell.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/02/2013 20:11

We were considering a weekly carboot/charity shop trip. We'd need ones without plastic eyes mind as he likes to hold them down with his paw whilst he pretty much rips their faces out Shock

My boy was the same, toys would last half an hour max. However we have just bought him a tuffy octopus toy. It's huge, he loves it and after 2 weeks it is still completely in one piece! They are expensive but worth every penny.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/02/2013 20:16

I'll see if I can inspect one of the kong ones Beertricks, thanks.

Oh he'd love the octopus as he likes playing tug with them, hence if he is not removing faces he is pulling off limbs!

These > www.petsathome.com/shop/ultimate-tug-o-war-by-tuffy-102827 last the longest with our boy, not very long but longer than the rest. Usually chews it in half then spends the next few weeks disecting the rest, stuffing out first then nibbling it to pieces.

Second best is the Kong Wubba > www.petsathome.com/shop/wubba-dog-toy-x-large-by-kong-37203 These usually last him about a week, first he nibbles the arms off then gets the ball out and chews the rest to pieces.

Third best is this ugly thing > www.petsathome.com/shop/captain-kurklops-by-tuffy-102821 These are tough and would have been the toughest if it weren't for the stupidly soft mouth, once they get that out it's history (literally lasted for 30 mins) and it has soooo many squeakers in it which he enjoyed ripping out too.

Our dog is VEEEEERY expensive in the toy dept. Rope tugs etc last seconds, stag bars last a few weeks but don't sate his soft toy habit. We have to get him his own toys or he steals the kids ones, lol.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/02/2013 20:45

Thanks, I'll have a look at those. He loves his stag bar but has had the same one for three months. Obviously because it doesn't have a face he feels compelled to remove Grin

ooh ooh let me see if I can find the one I bought my mum's dog who has a thing for taking all the stuffing out of soft toys. It's lasted years. Be back in a minute. Grin

MadCap · 27/02/2013 20:53

Wow, they still have something very similar

squirrels

MadCap · 27/02/2013 20:54

She could tear it apart with out destroying it iyswim.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/02/2013 20:59

Ahh I love that MadCap Grin I think it would upset me when he ripped their little faces off!

Some of the stuffing-free soft dog toys have survived a remarkably long time with my border terrier, who usually kills toys within half an hour. I think this one lasted nearly a year and I only chucked it out because it was getting too stinky. The squeak only lasted a day or two, though. And he didn't have them at the sharp-toothed puppy stage.

Also, our local pound/discount shop does some dog toys, and a plaited tug-of-war rope made of fleece fabric I bought there was remarkably indestructible - you could probably make them yourself.

exexpat · 27/02/2013 21:10

Aha - just looked, and found instructions on how to weave/plait a fleece dog toy. I think that might be DD's craft project for next weekend.

pigsDOfly · 27/02/2013 21:54

I've bought so many toys for my small dog and they've all gone the same way after a few minutes.

Charity shop toys are best as I don't feel so aggrieved if a toy has only cost me £1. But she always pulls their faces off first and the stuffing ends up everywhere, the plastic eyes and nose have to be removed before she can have them, and then the holes have to be sewn up. All a bit of a pain to be honest.

I bought her a toy from a pet shop yesterday that I thought would be fairly resistant to destruction. It had long arms and legs without stuffing and cost £9.99. Within minutes she'd chewed one foot off, one 'hand' was completely mangled and there was a huge hole in one arm.

She loves her stag bar, but really loves chewing soft things. Oddly enough she's never chewed anything that isn't a toy.

jay dog got 1 for christmas bloody pets at home 1 gone within minutes, he did have 1 that looks like those blue nose bears IYKWIM lasted for weeks was cord and triple stitched

mrsjay · 28/02/2013 10:10

ours has had a plaited thing since we got him in october from poundstretcher still in tact a few teeth marks

Floralnomad · 28/02/2013 10:16

Plaited fleece and rope get pulled apart in minutes here , he had one from Equafleece and have bought others from shops , I think he has very sharp teeth .

Pandemoniaa · 28/02/2013 10:17

I've never found any soft toys that the Terrorist couldn't destroy in seconds. This probably won't help but the best ever toys I bought him came from a pet shop in Portland, Oregon (Healthy Pets Northwest) where I got a twisty, tuggy toy and a small frisbee which he's absolutely murdered over the last 2 years. Still as good as new.

mrsjay · 28/02/2013 10:21

it is the figure of 8 one he has the straight knotted ones are dead within minutes it actually drives him mad he cant pull it apart. talking of knots he wont chew the rawhide bone knots he leaves them Hmm

mrsjay · 28/02/2013 10:23

im always worried about the stuffing in toys incase he chokes always seems to come through the other end though
