2 weeks on wed she'll be able to go out and for the last week she's had a lead attached for 15-30 mins each day my god I can't begin to imagine it'll ever work in the way its meant to. When it first goes on she wants to play with it and chew it so I bought chew deterrent but it doesn't work that well. If I take the end she goes mental she gets it in her mouth and its tug of war which doesn't stop so after a min or two I let go, i suppose because I'm worried I'm making it even worse. Is there any info on this I should look at for tips?

Urgh I remember those days. Awful isn't it? I can't really remember what I did to sort out the bitey lead phase. I think it was one of those things that seemed overwhelmingly difficult at the time, and so troublesome. And then it just got better. I think as he got older and worked out that lead = walk and that time spent biting the lead could be spent moving forward/sniffing etc he just gave up biting it. He also used to resist having the lead put on. He now sees the lead (whether it's when we're leaving the house, or when I'm about to put him back on the lead when he's off lead on a walk) and zooms over to me and parks his bum down so fast it's comical. He often actually SLIDES when he does it in the house, he slams his backside down so quickly. I could never, ever had believed that he would ever coming running and willingly sit down, without command, for his lead to go on and wouldn't bother trying to eat it!

I realise that probably sounds incredibly unhelpful. I think it will just get a lot better once the lead means FUN ie. walks to her. At the moment it just means 'weird thing attached to me getting in my way so I KNOW I will chew it'. But it's a good idea to at least get her used to being on a lead.

My puppy has just turned 1 by the way. The chewy lead phase seems like a lifetime ago.

Bet you can't wait to get her out for a walk! It's such an exciting first step.

Easier said than done but really don't panic! What I would say is try to avoid letting her chew it as that will be quite staisfying and rewarding. I gave pup a stuffed kong when his lead was on in the early days and it worked well. If he lost interest and went back to chewing, I removed it, session over. Also best to avois tuggy. I would hold it near his teeth, bunch it up in my hand and hold hand v still until he released then treat and take it away.

Once we got outside he pogoed around on the end like a mad thing and it took us a week to get to the end of the road. At 6 months his lead walking is pretty good so it doesn't last long!

Thank you both that's really good to hear, I've found a Kikopup video so I'm going to try that its basically showing pup the lead click and treating letting it drag around then when I try lead on her again ill do the kong thing the min it goes on but I think you're right that it'll be when she realises lead=walk will she then get better god I've booked her first training in for the 2nd day she's allowed out its going to be interesting!
