So im quite excited, we reserved a Hungarian Vizsla yesterday

we should be able to collect out new puppy in early april.
I've seen quite a few mumsnetters seem to own them.

After spending 2 hours yesterday with the breeder who have 10 adult Vizslas, (that was interesting) i can see why they are known as velcro dogs!

Our friends have a Vizsla, they are wonderful dogs, I am very tempted for one if we get another. Stunning looking and full of character. Bloomin loud too - our friends will talk to you! For every mile we walk, she does 10! Very 'in your face' with other dogs, despite a shed load of continued training.

They are HIGH energy dogs though, they make my Springer puppy look lazy and a tad thick in comparison. They will need at least two hours exercise and a ton of training to keep them happy, they also seriously follow you everywhere - almost stalker-like. If my friend moves round her kitchen island, she will be followed, it's not enough to be in the same room!

You are aware of these traits I assume? Not being negative but not for the faint hearted or inexperienced either! As one vet said, owning a Vizsla as a first time dog is like passing your test and buying a Ferrari

but for you. How exciting!

I swear this is true, I walk with one every day and and spend a lot of other time in her company.

She is absolutely adorable though and, as I say, I would have one myself, but you need to be aware of what you are taking on, that's all!!

You're brave - there is no way I'd take on one of those, they are a very high maintenance breed. I keep border collies - a walk in the park in comparison.

More work than a Springer or a Collie?!

My cocker/springer cross has me on my knees some days

My vet told me not to get a hungarian vizsla for exactly those reasons. So I bought a GSP. When he came home as a puppy, I brought in a dog trainer/behaviourist to make sure I didn't mess up. His reaction - "why did you buy a GSP - that's one seriously high energy breed, if you had spoken to me before I would have advised you buy a hungarian vizsla!!"

shouty, how much exercise does your gsp need?

Yay. That's great to read.
We are going to take our dog gun dog training and he will go out beating when he is old enough.
I might even lose a couple if pounds with all the walking I think I will be doing.

I know two other vizsla who are worked, in conjunction with a hawk. They are awesome in the field apparently and this guy ended up breeding his bitch, with ALL the puppies going into fully working homes because of the awesomeness of his vizslas!!!!

I have a one year old Vizsla, he's gorgeous, but, as other posters have mentioned, rather demanding! Feel free to ask any questions......

I have a vizsla. She is now 3 years old and was my first dog. She is absolutely soft as grease, a bit thick, bouncy-loopy when off lead but a total and utter joy. If we had the room, I wouldn't hesitate to have another vizsla companion for her :)

Watching her run at speed is a real thing of beauty. And I am still totally fascinated when she starts pointing!

Gorgeous dogs. I am very . I had a Weimeraner years ago. I think they are pretty similar in terms of temperament and energy.
I ended up working my boy as he got so bored of loping around the park.
