Labrador eating poo!

I have a lovely 2 year old chocolate labrador who is a brilliant dog, she just eats everything, and poo is the main problem.

Will she ever stop eating shit? It's disgusting and makes me heave every time she does it! Sheep poo I can kind of deal with (still annoying as she vomits the day after every time she does it), it's when she trots over to a big steaming pile of dog poo and happily munches away! It's not just that it's disgusting to watch, she is also sick every time she eats something she shouldn't, and it can't be good for her being sick all the time. I'm also worried that she could pick something up from eating poo?

She also sometimes has a poo, turns around and eats that! Hangs head in shame at having such a disgusting dog I have checked with the vet that her diet isn't lacking anything, and they have assured me she's not lacking any nutrients. And she can't be hungry - we feed her in a morning and she gets a treat ball (one of the big balls with a little hole that they have to roll around to get the treats out) in the afternoon, and then gets fed again at tea time?

It's also embarassing - she has been known to run up to a dog in a field that is having a poo and literally eat it as it hits the floor (I actually feel like I'm going to be sick writing this!!!) I know a few of you will say "keep her on the lead then" but her recall is good and she has so much energy that if she wasn't allowed off the lead then we would literally have to walk her 6 hours a day!

Help Me!!!!!! Grin

No words of wisdom. Our lab is not quite as bad in that he's very rarely sick but poo is a delicacy and goose poo a fav. Eurgh. He's grown out of eating horse steaming piles but he is 13 and still disgusting.

Thanks for the reply toughdecisions, looks like I'm stuck with this problem long term then Sad eurgh it makes me sick thinking about it Grin Mine is always sick - at everything! She ate a bit of mud off DP's boots the other day, went outside and threw it up - very weak stomach!

Cannot get it through my head, looking at a big pile of poo and thinking "mmm tasty" :)

I feel your pain. I have a nearly twelve year old lab/collie cross who has always had a poo penchant, although not her own poo. As she was getting older, it was becoming worse and as soon as she was off the lead, all she was interested in was finding and eating poo. Seriously, it was all she could focus on. Two weeks ago, I bought a muzzle and it has worked a treat. I just slip it on her when I let her off the lead. For the first week, I did have to clean poo off the muzzle after each walk as she was still determined to try and eat it but she seems to have caught on now.
I do worry that people will look at her and think she is an aggressive or vicious dog due to the muzzle but it has made walking her a pleasure again.

You have my sympathies, so frustrating trying to keep a poo eating lab away from the stuff.
My lab used to eat vast quantities of cow and horse poo, he'd wait till he got home and puke it all over the garden, then stink the house out with his breath and eye watering farts.
He stopped completely when he was about a year old. Maybe he just grew out of it or perhaps it was something I did.
I used to give him a few spoonfuls of probiotic yoghurt with his dinner as was told dogs sometimes eat poo because they're short of gut bacteria. Also, when he was off lead I'd put a very light house lead on him (£3 for a 7ft one from PAH) and leave it trailing to give me something to grab or step on. I used to use the command "wait" just before I did it so he learnt to stand still when asked.

Hi poor you. Our lab puppy eats mud - perhaps he thinks it's poo!

2 of our 3 labs are exactly the same! They relish any and all poo ................ Just as well we love them!!

My two year old doesn't wait for poo to hit the ground, he tries to get it directly from my other dog's bum! And once he vomited it all over me and my bed. Other times he has the good grace to vomit in the passage or living room. The only thing that works is to supervise every minute they're in the garden and use a shock collar when we're out. It seems cruel but we only had to shock him on low voltage about 3 times before he clicked and now it's a pleasure taking him out again.

Two year old lab, not DC!
