Where should puppy sleep

when we bring him home? We have a crate and I have read that we should take him upstairs the first few nights but I am not sure what to do for the best. Any words of wisdom?

Congratulations!

Dh slept downstairs with our puppy for the first few nights (puppy in crate) then gradually moved further away each night once he settled. This worked for us but he did well with toilet training at night very early which is a consideration.

Other people prefer to have them in the bedroom with them, what works for you I guess! We were not sure about this as dh has asthma and the above worked for us.

I left mine downstairs. I was all geared up for crying and whining but we popped him in the crate and he went to sleep.

He cried about 6 am when he heard dh in the shower but now at 6 months he sometimes refuses to get up when dh comes down. If he does it is only to transfer to the sofa (till lunchtime Shock). He is full on when playing or out but he is also a lazy goat at times!

Hopefully you will be as lucky! I left him downstairs and he was fine but I was prepared to play it by ear.

Thanks for that, I had thought of having him in our room but then he will have to sleep alone at some point so are we just making the process more drawn out ?

oh we didn't get up to him at night either (he didn't cry to go out) and he was clean at night from 9 weeks. We have been lucky!

BOF · 11/02/2013 21:55

Oh, keep him downstairs- start as you mean to go on. Unless you want him to sleep in your room/on your bed.

I'm still sleeping downstairs with our 12 week old pup, I let him outside in the night if he wakes up, last night he slept through so will be back in my bed soon and pup downstairs.

ReneandGeorgetteMagritte · 11/02/2013 22:26

Ours is only tiny (chihuahua) and we decided to risk having him in the bedroom straight away, although he was 4 months old when we got him. We used a training mat and picked him up forst thing and took him outside. That seems to have worked fine- he settles in his bed next to ours the moment we put the lights out.

lulu2 · 11/02/2013 22:39

I don't intend for him to sleep in our bedroom permanently.m

I let ours sleep actually properly in bed with us for the first two nights, then next to the bed in a box for a couple of nights, then in his own bed in his own room.

He settled with no fuss at all.

(I loved those two nights of a little furry baby snuggled up to me in bed....)

Floralnomad · 11/02/2013 22:53

If you don't want him upstairs I'd start off with him downstairs . Settle him late then perhaps get up in the middle of the night to let him out . Personally I would ignore as much whining as you can although I know other people think that's mean

TeaOneSugar · 11/02/2013 23:07

Ours slept in his crate downstairs from day one, I'm a light sleeper and did go down to him if her cried for more than a few minutes (big softy), best to start as you mean to go on.

lulu2 · 11/02/2013 23:16

I too sleep lightly and will hear him in the night. I think having him upstairs will disturb us all, I know dd will want to be in our room if the dog is.
Recipe for disaster methinks.
