We are collecting our puppy next week and its an hours drive home. DH will drive and i was just wondering if the puppy would be happiest travelling on my lap?

I'd carry it on my lap, wrapped in a towel in case of travel sickness/little accidents.

What sort of puppy?

I have always put mine in the boot, in a well secured cat basket or similar if they are very small. My theory is that they will always travel in the boot so they may as well get used to it from the outset.

So far this has never backfired on me but I have known people who have had dreadful "accidents" and one in particular whose puppy developed a phobia of the car, possibly as a result of being "abandoned" in the boot.
We will be getting our new puppy (hopefully) in May and DH is already angling to have her on his knee for the drive home. Given my so far unblemished record I am tempted to agree as my luck is bound to run out at some point :o

Do invest in a packet of decent baby wipe, decent kitchen towel and take several towels and carrier bags. Better to be well prepared IMO :o

Thanks for the wise words. We have already agreed that he won't be fed for a couple of hours beforehand!
I wasnt sure if it was best to put him in something to contain the mess!

He's a chocolate labrador.

I put mine on a blanket in the cat carrier strapped into the seat. (it has a thing to use the seat belt with) he whimpered for about 3 minutes then went to sleep.

Mine came home on my lap and since then has always sat on a seat ,he prefers to sit in the front , with a car harness on . He loves the car . My mum has always put hers in the boot ( hatchback) and they are a complete nuisance , I think its because they can't see out properly .

I think my dd would have something to say if the dog got to sit in the passenger seat instead of her!

Plenty of time to get him into riding in the back when he's settled down. No sane person would want an adolescent chocolate lab (or any other sort of lab) in the front cockpit, once they've discovered the labrador heaven that is canals, cowpats and dungheaps.

Floralnomad · 03/02/2013 21:37

That's what happens here , daughter sits in the back . If my son is with us as well dog sits in the back with daughter or on his lap in the front . Dog particularly likes it if you go through a drive through macdonalds and get him some chips!

Floralnomad · 03/02/2013 21:39

If mines dirty he sits on his blanket in a dog bag , so by the time you get home he is dry . He always wears his seatbelt otherwise he'd be on the drivers seat !

lulu2 · 03/02/2013 21:53

I have visions of a dog ordering chips at the drive through now!
