So this summer I want to teach SpicyDog some agility in the garden. Problem is she is nervous of new equpiment and trying new behaviours. She is clicker trained but responds best to praise and fuss. The issue is getting her to try the behaviours. I've been doing the 101 things to do with a box and after several sessions unless I put a treat in the box she just sits and looks at me with big sad confused eyes. I also tried to train her to press a buzzer to go outside but in weeks haven't got any further than eating a treat off it.

Are there any other exercises I can try to get her going and trying more adventurous things? She has learnt some cheeky behaviours from the pup and will chew the box if he is. Could I harness this?

Step by step.

So if you want her to jump over an agility jump. Put the jump pole on the floor if she looks at it click and treat.

If she sniffs it click and treat.

Move the pole away and then make her take a step towards it click and treat.

These three moves may take several days to achieve.

Then get her to step over it on the floor click and treat
Gradually put the pole up a fraction and click and treat.

So what ever behaviours you are encouraging start breaking it down into tiny chunks.

If you want to teach her to weave for agility just put up two weave poles. Click if she looks at them etc. Gradually get to the stage when she will walk through just two poles click and treat etc. Then put two poles further away and get her to walk through the first two poles and then move to the second two poles.

Also tricks are fantastic for building confidence. To start to teach directional commands get her to turn in a circle folllowing a treat to the right click and treat and the same for the left. Add the command left and right directionals taught!

Kiko pup is great for teaching tricks. Rear end tricks are great and help agility dogs loads. So teach her to walk backwards and back up steps - all of this will build her confidence and help with agility. If you want specific help on equipment just yell.

Brilliant, thanks. That sounds achievable with tiny steps. Although I think it might be a few weeks rather than days to get the moves!

We've spent a year getting all the basic day to day stuff in place and building enough trust to even begin to start working on the fun stuff. Whatever happened to her before she well and truly learnt that behaviours other than laying down quietly and looking after puppies bring bad things Sad
