Hi everyone. This is a post for those of us whose hounds have bald bums & thighs! Lincoln Uni are looking for canine participants in a 6 week trial, using the supplement Biotin. Details are below and if you are interested, please email: Joanne Weston - [email protected] You will need to let her know a little bit about your hound, and in particular their weight. The trial is only open to UK residents.
Biotin is a water soluble vitamin that may be linked to healthy hair growth and skin cell generation. There are a number of factors that can affect the growth of hair. The main component of hair is keratin. It is a protein that helps make hair hard and maintain strength. Biotin is essential for healthy hair growth as it plays a vital role in rapid cell division and production of cellular energy to produce keratin. The follicles that grow hair also require sufficient levels of glucose to grow new hair. Biotin plays a role in this by acting as a stimulant for insulin which is required to maintain glucose levels. Hair follicles also require oxygen in order to grow hair. Oxygen travels to the follicles by red blood cells and biotin also plays a role in the production of healthy red blood cells. Previous studies have shown a positive effect with the addition of biotin to the diet with 60% of dogs showed a significant improvement of their skin condition and 31% with a noted improvement.
The supplement is an addition to the normal diet for 6 weeks and dosage is dependant on the weight of the dog.
