Roll up, roll up! Anyone who has a Bastard Dog sign in here! Does your dog hate other dogs? Does he or she bark, lunge, growl or actually want to eat other canines? Are you regularly stressed, embarassed or rocking in a corner by your Bastard Dog's antics? Then this is your safe zone. Come hither and share your tales of woe, and also hopefully your successes.

Give us some background, thus:

BD breed: Spaniel cross
BD age: 18 months
BD behaviour: Jumps at approaching dogs and tells them to fuck off in a very vocal way.
BD training attempts: We're working on BAT, using tons of treats and actively avoiding interactions.
Frequency of BD incidents: Probably some kind of reaction every month or so, usually my fault.

Now, who's for gin?

Oh and she doesnt do puddles ever it has been known for me to pick her up across a large puddle that spanned the pavement so we could get home

gymmummy64 · 04/02/2013 00:28

He's back. Been gone just under 2 hours. I feel so deflated, I really didn't think he'd do this again, but I guess that's me reading it wrongly. Yet again.

MagratGarlik · 04/02/2013 07:27

Stars, the no puddles and needy sounds like a whippet thing. Whippets are known as Velcro dogs because they follow you everywhere! Most don't do weather, or wet of any kind.

TaggieCampbellBlack · 04/02/2013 07:44

Bad GymDog.
Although at least he knows where he lives and comes back on his own. That is a Good Thing surely.

I've had my sweet and cute 2 year-old 4 weeks now. She is driving me crazy with her refusal to wee or poo in the dark, where there are street lamps.
She only does her wee on the banks of the canal and after dark I cannot go there. Have even taken her 3 times during the day, and although lots of wees - no poo. Her preferred time and place is in the night in the kitchen on newspaper. 2 mornings running she has weed as well in the kitchen on newspaper < frustrated face.>And she has been pooing only in 3 day intervals. Could be worse.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 04/02/2013 09:44

A good result on this morning's walk. A bouncy, beautiful Golden Retriever appeared out of nowhere and started lolloping towards us. Jas stopped, and I got his attention and we started moving away. The Goldie really wanted to say hello and ran up, which unnerved Jas but he didn't go apeshit. He circled away, while looking at me, and I praised like crazy thus: 'Good boy! EXCUSE ME! Well done! MY DOG ISN'T FRIENDLY! So good, Jas! Yes! THANK YOU!'. The other owner was wonderful, called the Goldie back straight away and it ambled off wagging its tail. I yelled another thank you and he waved.

Now that's the kind of interaction I want every time. He gave 'sod off' body language and the other dog paid attention. I asked the other owner to give us some space and he did so no question. It's bloody lovely when that happens.

Wonderful. If only all dog owners could be like him.

starsandunicorns · 04/02/2013 11:16

Oh Magrat thanks i didnt know that shes a resucse dog so thought it might be due to that though she has no problem getting in sea Grin hates having a bath here but is well behaved when she goes for a pamper session where she is washed blow dried and gets her nails done :)

ClaimedByMe · 04/02/2013 20:23

BD has had a pretty good day, probably because she hasnt seen any other dogs her only downfall today was BChild 1 rattling the cat flap which turns BD loopy so we spent a while trying to calm her down, BChild 2 has just been scratched in the eye by BCat, BCat is 99.9% feral everyone knows not to approach her but he clearly thought better of it, BChild is nearly 8 and we had the Bcat before he was born, he knows not to go near her!

foolonthehill · 05/02/2013 09:49

preen preen (pride comes before a fall) today we ignored all dogs and spanielled about happily doing our thing, until the end of the walk when we very bravely said the briefest of hellos to a ...black dog!!!!!!!!!!!with an owner who read the signs and allowed us to move off quickly.

I am soooo happy#
remind me of this when Foolishdog tries to eat the next furry that crosses our path!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 05/02/2013 09:54

Ah, fool, I am glad. One good walk can really get you through the bad times. Well done that BD Grin

I think Cuebill has genuinely gone. I pm'd her a few days ago, to ask her not to leave over this, and to try to explain, as others have done on here, that the black humour of this thread isn't stealth boasting, but the relief of finding others in the same boat - but she hasn't answered.

Maybe she is ignoring my pm, or has taken a few days off - but maybe she really has deregistered.

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM · 05/02/2013 12:53

she did reply to me on a separate DH thread last Saturday.

Maybe she just hasn't been around much.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/02/2013 13:01

Maybe, Brian. I hope she hasn't deregistered because of this.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 05/02/2013 13:13

Christ, me too. I didn't mean to cause any offence. Have I misread the tone here? I was genuinely looking for a place to offload some of the angst.

OP posts:
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/02/2013 13:14

I don't think you have misread the tone at all, Chickens - I think Cuebill did.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 05/02/2013 13:17

I'm re-reading, and I honestly can't see anything but people making honest assessments of their dogs, and loving them regardless. We've even had a few breakthroughs. I feel quite shit about this now. Cuebill has helped me with Jas on a few occassions. I didn't intend to piss her off.

Can I join I seem to have a couple of bastard dogs !!
Bd 1 Gordon setter
Age 1 year
Problem. She's a barker and a jumper, loves sleeping on my range oven !! Sits on the work tops steals everything that is not locked in a cupboard as nothing is out of her reach :( cannot be contained as you've guessed it she jumps all gates. Her mother dogs jousts looks on blaming the father !!!!

Good points she's VERY happy shows like a dream and gets on with everyone :)

Baffledandbewildered · 05/02/2013 13:46

Oh sorry
Bastard dog 2 Irish setter
Age 8 so old enough to know better!!
Problems unusual in her breed hates small children ! People with shopping trolleys people on bikes people wearing hoods small white dogs . She has learnt recall but now chooses to ignore me so has to stay on her lead when out as there spare so many things she hates!!! She guards our house by barking and throwing herself at the windows if people she has decided she doesn't like walk past our house.oh and she is a food thief . Finally she is so strong willed she stopped showing by laying down and refusing to move lol !! She's very clever :)

Plus points very pretty loves her family great with the cats wonderful shes a mummy dog she's very clean bless her.

pinkbraces · 05/02/2013 16:18

oooh can I join in.

BD:3, Black Labradoodle
She loves people soooo much, look at me she shouts, let me jump all over you. Oh you have a dog, I dont like other dogs and she lets them know it quite vocally.
She is ball mad and if another dog is in her vicinity she guards her ball like they are the crown jewels, and if another dog even sniffs her ball, lets just say she isnt happy.

On the other hand she is the happiest, most gorgeous, lovable dog in the world, everyone loves her, and some of the old dears make a special beeline for her with biscuits :)

spudballoo · 05/02/2013 19:45

Oh dear I do hope Cuebill hasn't gone? What a terrible shame if so as I really appreciated her measured approach and advice, though I am a terrible lurker.

I don't think anyone on this thread is stealth boasting or enjoying their 'one upmanship' as an owner of a bastard dog. I'm sure all of us would do anything to transform our BDs in to Dream Dogs, and that all of us are trying our best - otherwise why would we be hanging out in the doghouse? If we were hopeless owners our BDs would have long been given up and handed over to a rescue. We are a brave army of Dogged Owners of Bastard Dogs who will NOT be beaten by the BDs!

Mine is an 11 month old labradoodle. I think that covers it all really.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 06/02/2013 11:19

I just gave Jas a haircut. I'm not very good at it. He looks like a child's wonky drawing of a spaniel now. I'm ashamed of myself.

OP posts:
ClaimedByMe · 06/02/2013 13:54

Aww poor Jas, you must post a pic of his new haircut so we can see!

A friend came over today with her 9 week old puppy and BD escaped out the livingroom into the kitchen where my sister was holding the puppy and BD ran up to the puppy tail wagging and sniffed it, she feckin sniffed the puppy and was tail wagging, almost normal doggy behaviour the strange thing was when I put her gen-con on her so she couldn't lunge for the puppy she turned aggressive, all very very odd!

Floralnomad · 06/02/2013 14:21

You are brave chickens , I've always clipped our horses but there's no way I'd have a go at the dog he goes to the hairdressers for his cut ,wash and blow dry .

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 06/02/2013 14:23

I only had a go because he was getting a bit scruffy and tracking more mud in to the house than strictly necessary.

My poor, lopsided hound :(
