Talk to me about the state of your lawn......

I have a beautiful garden. At least it would be if the lawn wasn't peppered with yellow burn marks and lush patches. Peppa does get walked twice a day, she pees every 30 seconds when we are out, and also pees every time she goes out in the garden in between times.
I would like to train her to pee and poo in one place in my garden, im thinking of getting a wooden sandpit and putting bark chippings in it, maybe round the side of the house. Is it possible to train a dog like this? We have tried every remedy known to man to prevent the lawn burn, but nothing seems to work with her, and she doesn't restrict herself to one patch on the lawn, she just pees and craps randomly. I have 2 kids and another due jn feb so I'd rather my lawn was a lawn rather than a dog toilet! I do pick up the poos daily, but it does leave poo on the grass, ESP in this weather when it's wet and the grass is long!

I did think about a fence, however peppa has an impressive jumping ability and can clear 4ft from standstill, higher if she gets a run up. If the kids were playing on the grass, she would be over the fence like a shot and playing with them.

Yes mine can jump it if he wants to but he doesn't bother .it really was a necessity for us as he eats plants and when we first got him he nearly killed himself digging up daffodil bulbs and eating them .

I would have been happy with just yellow patches, for us it was more like the entire lawn had turned into a patch of mud, and I couldn't get anything to grow there. It was a small lawn though, and two large-breed dogs, it never really had a chance.

I was worried about the fake grass smelling in the summer too. But I don't think it's any worse/different from if you had a normal lawn. Any small garden with big dogs regularly weeing in it is going to be prone to smelling a bit, regardless of whether you have real or fake grass, paving, gravel, whatever.

Training them to pee on walks is a good idea, though that was no good for our elderly dog who could only manage one short walk a day (and not even that towards the end), and needed to go a lot. Though really I was just glad when he did it in the garden and not the house...

I love my fake grass - haven't had any issues with smell or anything negative. We just clear up after dog and then hose which means much cleaner for all. Three little kids, big dog and London garden wouldn't be as fun with grass, mud and poo remnants IMO. x

NotWankinginaWinterWonderland · 20/12/2012 21:48

I was doing well for 3 months, like I said on here last night, things change, I just let my dog out the back nice new grass to go to the loo!!

Tbh the nice new grass hasn't looked the same since the Dc have been running around on it after I cut it on the one chance I had, it started going yellow anyway, I will see how it looks next summer, all one or two days of it!

yuleheart · 21/12/2012 13:26

...ok, have purchase tomato ketchup to put on pooches breakfast.

Will report back in a few months when hopefully the back lawn is no longer a swamp (even the dogs wont go on it at the moment - they don't 'do' mud apparently)....

CatchingMockingbirds · 21/12/2012 13:29
