Signs of a bitch coming into season

We adopted a 14 month old lab cross last week and I THINK she may be coming into season - yikes! According to her previous owners - who weren't caring :( - she hadn't had a season whilst living with them. Her vulva looks quite enlarged and her teats look more pronounced than a couple of days ago. Would the change of coming to another home (with 2 other dogs) perhaps have kickstarted this? All our previous rescue dogs have either been male or speyed so we've never encountered this before! TIA.

Have you considered that she may be pregnant?

doglover if it helps my curly is coming up to 13 months and has yet to have her first season. The vet said she will have had one but it was 'silent'. I can't remember what the big curlies signs were as she was spayed after her second season. She was also about 16months old before her first 'proper' season. And had the two she had 10 months apart. Little curly is moulting like mad though!! As such I have decided this is a definite sign that her season is starting soon!!

The same thought occured to me to Scuttle. Swollen vulva alone - season. Swollen vulva and swollen teats - pregnancy or phantom pregnancy.
I would get her checked at the vets so you can make a plan.
You'd be surprised the number of unnoticing owners who say 'oh we have had no season' and then there is a virgin birth Xmas Shock.

One of my labs has wheel nut nipples when in season - huge. They do go down per and post season a little but are never going to be subtle.

Nipple status does depend a little on the dog but a quick trip to the vet to check out a possible phantom in a dog you have no real history for is a very good idea; it is possible.

But, so is having a first season at 14 months!

I remember my dog licking herself a lot when she was coming into season. Not sure about the teats though as she'd had a litter of pups before she came to us so already had large teats.

Thanks everyone. I've booked her into vets tomorrow for a check!

The next one, if she is not spayed, should be in 6 months.

doglover · 20/12/2012 14:23

There won't be a next one! Smile
