new neighbours' dog!

We have new neighbours, who have a dog. Not sure of the breed! Medium sized! Basically it's howling miserably at night, and whenever the neighbours are out.
I know all dogs will be different, but I wondered how likely this will be to do with feeling insecure at the move, whether I'm now destined for a lifetime of wailing from next door, whether I should say something as maybe they don't realise.....
I can (sort of) live with the noise, though occasionally it gets to quite alarming volumes! It's more upsetting than anything.
Any advice out there?

How long since they moved in?

have you told them that their dog is crying? they might not know

If they seems approachable, I'd say something in a non-confrontational way

As they are out when he howls, they will not know. If it's only a few days since they moved in, he may soon stop. Are they out all day?

digerd · 14/12/2012 17:16

Just read your thread and you say he howls at night. Is that when they are in bed?

MagicHouse · 15/12/2012 00:40

Hi there, they've only been in a few days. I'm guessing some of the howling must be when they're in bed (unless they go out before 7 in the morning) and some is when they're out in the day. I'm not really sure how long they're out for, or how long he's left on his own.
I think I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if it settles down. I don't want to make a fuss. I'm sure they hear my two young children from time to time! I was more worried about how distressed he sounds, but friends have said he might just need a bit of time to get used to his new home. He's been quiet this evening so fingers crossed.

If I were your neighbours, I'd want to know that my dog was distressed. I reckon Bumpy has the best plan. Can you catch them casually? Maybe pop a welcoming Christmas Card over as an excuse to chat with them?

GrimmaTheNome · 15/12/2012 13:57

I'd want to know if my dog was howling when I was out.

It is heart rending, to hear a dog howl, isn,t it? A whole week would be too long for the dog's well-being, so hope he adjusts before then.
