Advice on dogs skin infection please

kid · 13/12/2012 00:09

My dog has had a skin infection on the skin around his mouth in the past.
The vet usually gives a couple of antibiotic injections (costing over £200 in totalSad)
We do have insurance but I know they will not pay for this as they have put a temporary exclusion for 2 years on any skin conditions as he had it in October 2011 so its considered pre-existing.

I've read online that you can use fucidin on dogs with this problem.
Are there any vets that can confirm this or any dog owners that have used it on their dogs?
If not, is there something else I could use?

I've just started using cooled boiled water and salt but I don't want it to get worse. He seems okay in himself, still eating and drinking as normal but he is licking more than usual and this is causing discolouration on parts of his fur.

The vet did name it once but I can't remember it now. It's a bacterial infection on the folds around his lips. He has had cream, in the form of drops, for it before and I was advised to put it on just before we walked him as he'd be too distracted to lick it off.

Might not be any use but my mums cat gets a recurrent skin problem on his face , he gets what looks like black scabby patches and she ( on vets advice) washes it with a hibiscrub solution . He has had tests but they can't work out quite what it is and that seems to work .

I'll look that up, thanks.
The last time he had it, the vet said it was Lip Fold Pyoderma. There is no smell this time but I know it's the same thing. I'm guessing its not as bad as it was before but I fear it will end up the same if I don't do something straight away.

Thank you. I'll put the cream on this evening so I can be 100%sure he doesn't lick it off. I'll also get some hibiscrub which I assume I can use to wash the area to keep clean and free from infection.
I had no idea the excessive licking was because his mouth was sore, I thought he was just being annoying!

Personally I always treat lip fold pyoderma with fucidin (fuciderm) and oral antibiotics coupled with twice daily firm bathing. This is a condition you have to be careful looks all innocent, but because of it's closeness to the oral mucous the bacteria can easily get into the blood stream causing more serious problems.

how would I know if it was more serious? there is no smell whereas before, you could smell him before you saw him! it looks sore, but he let's me touch it.
