Puppy leaping the wall

Any ideas how I can stop my nine month old German shepherd jumping over the four foot wall at will? Until I can get OH to stick a fence on top of the wall I can't see any way of keeping her in the garden, and I can't be home all day as I have appointments and school runs etc. we've tried treats/no treats. I know there's no quick fix, but boy do I need one, ha ha.

Keep her in the house when you are out? Or build an enclosed dog run in the garden? Or as you said, raise the height of the wall?

Does your dog actually stay in the garden all the time?

Lougle · 06/12/2012 07:24

How long are you OT for, and why doesn't she stay in the house at that time?

Lougle · 06/12/2012 07:24

out*

Every year we had to add an extra layer of trellis on our garden walls to stop our labradoodle puppy doing the same thing! This year he turned 6and has finally admitted our garden is way more fun than next doors and this year there didn't have to be any more defences!

TantrumsAndBalloons · 06/12/2012 07:39

Is there a reason the dog is outside while you are out?

AdoraJingleBells · 06/12/2012 11:22

She's outside because we need to sell the house. And yes, they are currently outside all the time, we're in the southern hemisphere so no cold nights at this time of year.

Can't put her inside while I'm out as the alarm isn't set up for it. House is open plan other than the kitchen and that heats up when the door and window are closed. She's safer roaming the surrounding streets than in a 40C -plus kitchen for an hour. Can't leave the alarm off either as we're in a high risk area. Anyway, she leaves even when we are home. Even after a nice long walk, or playing all in the garden.

We have tried with an enclosure in the garden, she got out of that too.

I try not be away from home for too long, but Dr etc is a 35 KM drive away, school run takes an hour for the round trip.

Thanks for your input, sorry mine's all negativeSad I'll work on getting OH to spend the money to make the wall higher, trellis would prob work, this weekend.

littlewhitebag · 06/12/2012 12:26

AdoraJingleBells · 06/12/2012 12:46

Thanks Partridge I'll look through her videos a bit later, need to run out to the dentist now.

litlewhitebag I've seen the reports about your weather, my pooches would probably love that - for about half an hour.

you cant leave her in the garden until the wall is fixed higher. why cant OH do it tonight? buy some trellising and get it done. if that really cant happen then buy a crate and crate train her, put her in teh coolest room with a fan/aircon on. if you are only away for an hour at at time then a crate is suitable. if you cant do that you need to get another enclosure. one with a roof on it. the one you bought was clearly not suitable for a large dog. buy a proper one and have it installed securely. but in teh meantime you cant have her in the garden.
