Would it be too cheesy to send a sympathy card?
He was 12 (good age for a pedigree) and they doted on him.

Nope, not too cheesy at all. I think it's a very sweet gesture.

Wouldn't necessarily send a bereavement card though. Or one with a dog on it. Just a nice safe pretty card with a 'sorry' message in. But more personal than a text message.

We've lost two dogs this year, both elderly but very much loved. We had several beautiful cards from friends and family and it meant a huge amount to us. Mostly nice "Thinking of You" type ones.

Your friend will appreciate this.

I've received and sent cards in this situation. I've kept all the ones I was sent for all of my late dogs. I particularly loved the ones where my friends had written some nice words in.

My cat died two weeks ago. If somebody had sent me a condolence card, it would have meant the world to me that my absolute pain and shock had been recognised and validated by others because believe me, I am utterly grief stricken and miss him so much.

MNers have been such a comfort but in RL, you worry that people think you are over reacting to the death of 'just' an animal. So go ahead, send that card. Your friend will always remember your thoughtfulness.
