Can I have a bit of advice regarding getting another dog please

I think this is the second thread I have started on here in regard of getting another dog.

I am an experienced border collie owner. They were the dogs we grew up with as children and when I got my own flat aged 18, I adopted a border collie lurcher from a very reputable rescue organisation. She had lots of problems. She had been an unclaimed stray and had been rehomed several times before she came to me. She was quite wild, an escape artist who never really was allowed off the lead. She would unlock the doors and get out of the house, open cupboards/the fridge etc. She was the kind of dog that was hard work and I don't think many people would have put up with her for very long. She was dominant and didn't like men getting near me. The list is endless really, but I worked really hard with her and she became an absolutely wonderful family pet and when I had children she was absolutely golden with them. Unfortunately just over 12 months ago at the age of 17/18 I had to have her put to sleep :( In the meantime of having this dog I got another rescue dog from Wales, another border collie, this one is now 10yo. She is a completely different dog, a bit on the nervous side but very loving, loves walking long distances but isn't playful in the same way the other dog was, but is almost a perfect family pet, wont mess in the house etc and you can really trust her.

Anyway. I have been looking at other dogs on rescue organisation websites etc and I haven't seen any suitable but the other day one came up that I thought would be ideal so I applied and they rang me, seemed keen etc and I went to see him and they said I could reserve him but the other dog had to get on with him, which I agree is important. So I took the other dog along and we got half an hour locked in a compound/grassed area and they then decided the other dog was too boisterous for my dog. My dog is extremely well trained though and isn't a dog that will run in a field unless you are walking through it iykwim If I stand still she will sit next to me looking at me. If we are with strangers she will stay at hell and walk behind but this was why they didn't think the dogs were suited together, yet I felt that with the right training the other dog could be quickly sorted out and make a good family pet for us. Instead they suggested another more difficult dog, with lots of problems because I was an experienced border collie owner Confused

I don't know what to do now. I feel really disappointed, obviously. I don't know whether to just knock the whole idea on the head and just have the dog I have as a single dog. She just seems so lonely though as a single.

Thanks for letting me offload

I have a new little pup from wiccaweys :) god they are such lovely people and really took their time, nothing was rushed. Thank you so much scuttlebutter for recommending them, they are so responsible which I think is an incredibly important thing when rehoming rescues. My new little dog is lovely and really wants to please you and the other dog is showing off her dentistry but is already calming somewhat and is fine outside with her

Wonderful news, OL! I've been following this thread and am delighted that everything has worked out so well for you Smile.

Scuttlebutter · 26/11/2012 11:07

This has made my day. Grin Smile

Congratulations on your lovely new arrival, and good luck with settling in.

May I just, ahem, hint how much we all love looking at pics of adorable new rescue dogs.... whistles.... looks innocent..... Wink

OwlLady · 26/11/2012 11:17

I have made a photo gallery but I can't even see it now, goodness I am so un-technically minded!

scuttlebutter, did you speak to someone about me at wiccaweys? because she said someone has said that somebody else had put a family onto them and she thought it was me and I said oh I spoke to someone online about it and then felt a bit embarrassed about my online habit Blush:o

OP posts:
Scuttlebutter · 26/11/2012 11:26

Yes, Owl, though not directly. My friend who is one of their homecheckers is also a MNetter Grin and as I happened to be seeing her last Thursday I mentioned it to her. So it's possible she in turn may have mentioned this to Wiccaweys.

Nothing to be embarrassed about on MN (though saying that, there are the bumsex/dragon butter type threads Grin) - I am "out and proud" even though I am not even a mum!

OwlLady · 26/11/2012 11:48

yes, that is what must have happened! She said about it and I said no, it can't be me and my husband said 'are you sure Owllady, I think it might be regarding your online postings' :o

Despite some really quite normal destruction when i left her this morning to do the school run she is doing fabbo. She is even sitting already for treats and has gone into her crate and is really just a lovely bright puppy (and less smelly now I have bathed her :))

Great news! Congratulations on your new arrival.

OwlLady · 27/11/2012 11:37

She is so lovely and eager to please :) and even my older dog seemed to quite like her on the walk today rather than just tolerating by ignorance Wink

I think my neighbours might start calling me good girl though as I have said it so much over the last two days Blush

Did I mention she's gorgeous? She's beautiful.

Scuttlebutter · 28/11/2012 14:03

OwlLady · 28/11/2012 14:11

She's lovely! How old is she? Smile

SpicyPear · 28/11/2012 14:55

Bee-yoo-ti-ful! I want OwlPup snuggles Envy

OwlLady · 28/11/2012 14:57

They think she is about 5/6 months, not sure though. She is a bit on the ribby side, poor wee thing but seems to have gotten a bit chunkier even in a few days Blush

pimmsgalore · 28/11/2012 15:55

OwlLady I want, she is adorable.

Pimmsdog was very ribby when we got him, had been starved and beaten, it was amazing how fast he put weight on. Don't worry her ribs will be all but a memory in a few weeks Grin

QuietTiger · 30/11/2012 08:56

Owllady I'm the friend of Scuttlebutters who is involved with Wiccaweys. :)

Scuttle did indeed mention you to me last Thursday when she saw me. I was up at Wiccs collecting a dog myself last week and I mentioned to Sarah that Scuttle had passed on their details to you, (you'd had your homecheck and had your visit booked) and said that good collie homes are getting more difficult to find at the moment. As an example, by 3pm on Monday (start of the new week) they'd had 22 phone calls from people wanting to hand collies in to rescue!!

With Wiccaweys, no one is safe... Wink We have ways of checking the dogs that rival MI5. Grin

And your new addition is indeed very beautiful. :)

LadyTurmoil · 30/11/2012 10:12

He is lovely! Do you know what he's mixed with? He looks very similar to a lot of the shepherd type dogs from Romania/Bulgaria. I had already looked at the pictures but didn't have time to comment...it's funny though, to have a nosy at other people's sofas/rooms/floors in photos like this - they all have much nicer kitchens than mine, unfortunately. Can't even swing a hamster in mine! Sad

OwlLady · 30/11/2012 10:16

Hello QuietTiger, this Monday they had 22 calls from people? jesus wept :( The dogs are lovely too, it's just such a shame. I know collies come with unique attributes but surely people know that before signing up to it? My son, the youngest one (not the one who told her he was very sophisticated Wink) described Sarah the other day as 'the lady with the very little dog and the bigger smiling dog with the curly hair' :o She is settled in fine btw, it's like we have always had her. My other dog seems to actually like her as well, which is great :) and last night she did some frantic playing with her, which I haven't seen her do since we lost our other dog last year, so it was really great to see/watch

In other news, I took my older dog to the vets Wednesday and she created an audience of people wanting to look at her as they didn't believe she was 10 as she is apparently 'perfect' (well apart from two teeth Confused but she's ten!). The one vet wanted to show the nurses and other vet how flexible her joints were Shock:o and she let them all mess with her without any bother

and lol at the MI5. The lady who did the homecheck lives at the end of my lane, knows my landlord, knows the man I have my chickens off, knows the woman who lives at the back of me, knows the woman who lives two doors up etc etc!
