Before I head upstairs with pup, how long would you give the crate before giving up

6 nights now and pup gets so stressed in there. I think i will have to let him upstairs but still hesitant. he has twice barked so much in there he has vomited. I guess crates don't suit all dogs. Also as he is a rescue pup he hasn't had that great a start and maybe the whole crate thing is too stressful for him?

If someone let me sleep in a bed I doubt I would decide the landing was a good option later .

I think if it was me and my pup was vomiting through distress I'd have to take him upstairs, can you put the crate in your room and see if that helps?

WTFwasthat · 04/11/2012 08:49

doubt it was fireworks as he has been like it a week. he slept fine in my room! Bestnight's sleep we have all had since he artived!

Our boy settled after a few nights but on someone's advice I put a hot water bottle and ticking clock in his bed and it really seemed to help.

WTFwasthat · 04/11/2012 09:31

Have you tried reducing the size of the crate? Perhaps put something in half way to divide it, then his bed etc at the front of the crate?

My 7 week old puppy slept through the night from day one. He was wedged in between us Grin

fanoftheinvisibleman · 04/11/2012 10:02

WTF, if I were you I'd just make a decision that works for you and stick with it. If you want him downstairs and can stick with it then do it. But if you can live with him sleeping at the end of your bed and it suits you and him, it's nowt to do with anyone else so don't feel bad about it.

It like having kids isn't it? My puppy sleeps in the kitchen. It doesn't make me some sort of superior puppy owner to someone who's puppy sleeps in the bedroom floor. I'm just doing it differently. Plus I wouldn't look superior if you saw some of the crazy lengths I've gone to get the little blighter to eat! I think most dogs wrap their owners round their paws one way or another! If you're all happy it's a good thing.

WTFwasthat · 04/11/2012 10:54

fanoftim- i know it will work for us and there's no real prob with it but i hadn't envisioned a dog in my room! i thoight i would be able to do the crating thing but he gets stressed even if i go upstairs and the gate is closed!

Go with the crate upstairs and as he gets more content, move it inch by inch each night out of your room and downstairs if that's where you want him to end up.

It'll be fine. Even if you decide you like having him upstairs in the end.

LadyTurmoil · 04/11/2012 16:18

WTF how did it go last night?

AwsomeMrsFox · 04/11/2012 16:18

We caved in and let our first dog settle in our room many years ago, eventually (when we got sick of listening to him licking his bits throughout the night!) we moved his bed just outside the bedroom door, then along the landing, downstairs and eventually to the utility where we ideally wanted it. That worked fine.

The only additional comment I would make is that sometimes it is very hard to break habits and is much easier to do things as you want them from the outset. The example I was thinking was letting AwesomeDog onto our bed for a cuddle. It was fine at first, but then he would bounce up there when he had just come in from the garden all wet and stinky, then he got fleas...ewwww! It was really hard to stop him coming up and I really wished we had never allowed it from the start.

Changing habits/behaviour takes time!

Ladyturmoil. Last night I put Max in crate in my room and he went ballistic! After the first wave of howls had abated I opened the door. He leapt on my bed and we both had the best night's sleep we had had in a week! I got up for a wee at 545 and he headed downstairs after preing on the carpet! I would have popped him outside for a wee butt I was too late! I then brought him back upstairs where we went back to sleep unt 8am when ds came in! Not ideal having him in there but no harm done etc etc. my aister's dog started off like this and now opts for her bed downstairs in preference. Am hoping Max is the same Hmm

WTF Oh I'm so pleased you got a good night's sleep! You must be feeling a whole lot better today (I hope!) A bit of wee on the carpet's not so bad...he just obviously hated the crate, maybe he was in one when he was smaller and that's why he howled...who knows, but seems like you've got your own hot water bottle now! Hope it's the same tonight Grin

Cuebill · 04/11/2012 19:24

I'm glad that you got a better night sleep and you are happy with your decision.

You will have to teach your dog to be happy with his own company. There is a great video by the fantastic Kikopup that shows you how to give a dog confidence to be left on his own.

Any kiko pup videos are a must for new dog owners or owners new to clicker training.

WTFwasthat · 04/11/2012 21:52

cuebill -thankyou for link. Max is ok with being in crate for short spells during the day (bedtime for ds, changing bedding u/s etc or dropping dd at her various engagements! he might have a little moan but then settles quickly and is always quiet when i return to him which I do with a minimum of fuss. It seems to be nights he hates. They are obvs quieter (despite leaving tv in background etc) for light and sound and making it so cosy with blanket over it. he just doesn't like it

I think your little boy has got you sussed ! He is obviously a very clever little chap who will have you running round in circles . Good luck!

WTFwasthat · 04/11/2012 22:31
