Shall I send my dog to a residential training kennel?

I own a border collie. She's four years old, wonderful in the house, great with DCs etc and generally an absolute pleasure.

However, she turns into a complete monster out of the house. She gas zero recall, barks aggressively at other dogs and generally makes walks a horrible, embarrassing ordeal. She went to puppy classes when she was younger but we were asked to leave because of her behavior. It seems to be fear rather than aggression but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with.

I floated the idea of sending her to an experienced trainer to DP but he seemed opposed, saying they're cruel and aggressive but I just don't know what else to do with her. WIBU to send her for her benefit as much as mine?

Did you really comment on a 6 year old thread just to start a debate on shock collars? Hmm

Just reported this

We got our terrier when she was 8. The issues we had with her had been the same with her previous owner, who had had her from a pup. We called in a trainer who worked with us and the dog.

The dog came to us last December and now seems like a totally different dog. It is a pleasure to walk her instead of the nightmare it was before. Her problems also stemmed from fear, and I don’t think she would have coped with being away from us.

Our trainer charged £60 for the first 2 hour session, then £40an hour after that. We only needed 2 sessions so it was well worth the money to have a much happier and confident dog.

There are very good reasons why there are plans to ban shock collars (and no good reasons to bump such an old thread to advertise them)

I did this last summer - new rescue went away for 4 weeks £1200. He was funny with other dogs, fear aggression and very vocal. He was perfect with their trainer, when I picked him up 4 weeks later and he was running round off lead with other dogs whilst trainer supervised. Once he was home, he "defaulted" to old behaviour. Over the last year I have done further training and he is really good now but if I am honest, I was disappointed as he was only well behaved for that one trainer even though I used all the methods they advised when I brought him home and it took many months of my training to get him calmer.
I have emailed them a couple of times since but never had a reply which was also disappointing.
