Rehoming great dane :(

DH and I are moving to a new place soon and, since we are having to rent, it is proving difficult to find landlords that will happily take on 2 great danes.

At the moment there are a couple of places we have seen that will accept 1 but not both :(

Basically, it looks like we will probably have to rehome our girl GD but I have no idea how to go about this. Who do I contact and would we have to take her to them or would they collect her?

Really hope we don't have to but it is looking more and more likely and I just want to make sure that I know what we need to do to find her somewhere she will be happy and well looked after if the time does come :(

Does anyone have any experience of rehoming?

Is there a Great Dane rescue? They're probably your best bet if you have to rehome. Sad for you though :(

How can u choose between them?

Most breeds have a Rescue and usually will pick up if you can't get to them. Must be hard decision for you

The great Dane rescue society are fantastic - we got both our Danes from there as a child.

Thanks - we did look at them when were thinking about getting danes in the first place! Do you know if they will pick them up? I'm just wondering since neither of us drive..

Am I right in thinking that Dane rescue put their danes in 'foster care' rather than kennels? I think I would prefer that, I hate the idea of her being put in kennels :(

I don't want to give either of them up but she is the much more independent of the 2 and I think she will adapt to a new family much better than our boy.

It's still really hard though :(

Have you no friends or family that could take her if you offered to still pay towards her keep?

Have you spoken to their breeder? Many good breeders insist on taking their puppies back rather than having them re-homed. It is worth a try.

Before you begin the rehoming, have you tried Petlets - a register for landlords who accept tenants with pets? See link here - seems a good place to try.

Talk again to agencies in the area to which you are moving - ways to make yourself more acceptable as a tenant include offering a larger deposit, pet insurance for any damage caused, and extra references.

When we moved into rented accommodation for a work related move for DH, we had three large greyhounds and faced a similar situation. Our solution was to advertise in the local papers for the area we were moving to in the Accommodation WANTED section - we were explicit about our dogs, but also mentioned that we were a professional non smoking quiet couple. To our amazement, this generated a wonderful assortment of property calls including a farmhouse we still dream about. We eventually ended up renting through a very nice agency but it isn't impossible.

If that still doesn't work, I can recommend Great Dane Care here - I know Liz and they are brilliant.

Don't give up! We moved house with 2 dogs. We are still in rented accommodation and now have 3 dogs and 8 birds of one sort or another. I know it would be hard to move again. Keep looking and please take up Scuttlebutter's ideas!
