Adopting a staffie

Pernickety · 27/09/2012 09:08

In looking for a family dog to adopt, we are open to adopting a staffie, since I have met some which I could not help falling in love with. And because of the many reports of people saying it has been the best dog they have ever had as a pet.

But I am wondering whether I need to grow a thick skin to own this breed due to many people holding negative perceptions of this breed of dog. I am sure my own extended family would be raising their eyebrows if we announced this is the dog we have adopted.

Will be first time dog owners. Am I going to have to contend with being snubbed in parks and people crossing the street when I walk the dog, and will my children's friends not be allowed around to play? Will my mother become hysterical assuming our children are going to be attacked by the dog? Or do people quickly come round when they meet our dog and realise how lovely he or she is? we would only go for a staffie that is well socialised and good around other dogs, and obviously, known to be good with children. But I cannot help worrying if I have broad enough shoulders to take on other's negativity. Can you reassure me?

A "Mumsnet Staffie" I have never been in a club before now I feel part of one Grin

D0oinMeCleanin · 29/09/2012 11:00

We met a beautiful one today. All blue and shiny, very shiny, unfortunately he wanted to play rough and tumble with my sighthounds. Sighthounds don't do rough and tumble so I had to send him away Sad And as my sighthounds learnt Staffies don't play chase me, chase me.

I got to give him a treat first (I asked if I was allowed)

SpicyPear · 29/09/2012 11:02

D0oin I'm thinking of a DNA breed test for SpicyDog as she loves to follow a scent and does enjoy a good chase me chase me. She's proper staffy size, but with a less chunky head and a red rather than a black nose and I can't for the life of me work out what the other bit of her is.

TantrumsAndGoldAndOrange · 29/09/2012 11:18

Oh I had one like that.
Smaller head and longer legs than a staffy.
Was never sure what the other bit of her was either.

Hi we recently fostered a 10 yr old staffie mix (have no idea what she is mixed with) bitch, she is wonderful with our small children and all visitors and strangers. I thought I didnt even like dogs but am in love with her and would never be without her, we are going to try and adopt. But she is a little unsure of other dogs, seems ok greeting old large dogs but definetly dislikes young dogs bounding up to her and I believe she views small dogs and cats as prey.So just be careful when you are out walking until you know how your staffie reacts to different dogs. we recently had a huge out of control young alsation run at full pelt across a field to us whilst its elderly owners shouted at it to come back, I was very worried and our dog did threaten it with barking and snapping but I had her on the lead and held her close, but ended up having to shout and wave this other dog away as I felt our dog would bite it. They did eventually get it under control, our dog would never run over to another dog, shes not interested even if they bark, but its different when they invade her space, I was pretty scared of the whole situation.

Awww - I didn't adopt a staffie in the end and I feel a bit guilty for not doing so. I maybe ought to have looked further to find one that appealed to me. I thought that last night as I watched that dog programme and saw the two staffies on there.

They are the new "status" dogs for the middle class here in the better parts of the Cotswolds. I keep seeing Barbour wearing ladies and blokes with Hunter wellies and their new rescue Staffies walking up the high street. Lucky dogs to have a life kipping on Chintz covered sofas and curling up by log fires.

UterusUterusGhali · 16/10/2012 21:08

What did you get, Pernickety?

Arf at middle class status dogs. Maybe soon the DFLs around here will appreciate me for the trend setter that I am.
Grin

(Trend setter in this corner of Hampshire. I've got The Only Staff in the Village.)

My DD is 10yo and is slowly coming to terms with her totally unexplained dog phobia.
She has gingerly patted a Siberian Husky, and a lurcher.

She went to a party and the owners had a staffie. I explained to her that they were known as "The Nanny Dog".
By the time I picked her up she was cuddling him.

BTW, I've never let my DD see those news stories about dog attacks -she knows they happen but she doesn't need to know too much.

So she sees Staffies as chunky, wriggly hoiunds, not the child eating monsters that the press portrays them as. (Though I am aware there are some dogs -and their owners that I wouldn't want to meet on a dark night) Shock

Pernickety · 17/10/2012 21:02

I have to admit I was nervous of staffies until I met one properly. Dh's friends have an old gentleman staffie and we stayed with them for a weekend. I have wonderful photos of my two DDs sat with this soppy old dog lolling all over them. He was like putty in their hands. i look upon staffies in a completely different light. I saw two tonight on their evening walk that looked lovely. Our dog, which we haven't collected yet, is a black mutt! Wire-haired, sort of spaniel size. It's hard to determine her breeds!

Someone in our park has got a rescue staffy-cross and has become a pariah. Everyone turns and walks the other way if he appears. That includes me. I don't want a bred-for-fighting dog anywhere near my dog.

LST · 18/10/2012 20:13

Is he aggressive sunflower? Hmm

UterusUterusGhali · 18/10/2012 20:21

What sort is your dog, sunflower?

ceres · 18/10/2012 20:55

"I don't want a bred-for-fighting dog anywhere near my dog."

don't be so bloody ridiculous.

Ridiculous statement. Completely ill informed tosh.

ChestyNutterStaringInTheWindow · 18/10/2012 23:16

What a load of old balls ^^

My lovely beautiful, soppy big lummox of a staffie is currently laid on my knee legs in the air like a giant baby.

I wouldn't have any other breed Smile

UterusUterusGhali · 18/10/2012 23:41

Don't you just hate it when those bred-for-trotting-alongside-carriages dogs like dalmations pad along behind your car.

Or when those retrievers just bring you shit all the time.

Sunflower, you know about nature/nurture, right?

The fad for staffs is over with regards to the underclass.

The new uber chav accesssory is a wolf-dog type or husky for their high rise flat and one poser outing per week. The fate of these dogs once their owners realise they are too independent minded to be trained as inner city weapon dogs doesn't bear thinking about. Many will end up pts. I expect husky-mix type dogs to form the next flood in rescue along with labradoodles. They don't even have KC breed support in the background due to all in the infighting between the Inuit/timber-wolf/utogan breed societies. No official recognition or support means they are the perfect puppy farm fodder.

Now the middle-classes have taken to adopting nice staffs/crosses that they have become a status symbol once more in certain tweedy circles. Long may this fad last Grin

sunflowerseeds · 19/10/2012 21:07

To everyone who asked, yes, this staffy cross dog is aggressive.

topknob · 19/10/2012 21:16

I love my friends staffy :) he is lovely ! and a rescue dog.. we have a GSD who is a miserable cow at times with dogs, people etc and we have to watch her more than my friend does her staffy !

LST · 19/10/2012 22:25

So you tar all fighting breeds with the same brush sunflower?
