My son is thirteen months, and I have two dogs, one a nine-year-old small female that is blind in one eye. Thus far she has been okay around my son, a little nervy, but quite manageable. She is sweet, but she definitely has a terrier edginess to her. She paces a lot when my son crawls by, and any whoops of enthusiasm I give my son to encourage walking, she comes dashing over, as if both agitated and excited by proceedings.

I have supervised like a hawk, and don't allow my son to touch the dogs, except when they're calm. Next step is a baby gate and a behaviourist, but I'm looking for similar tales, ideally ones with hopeful outcomes. If anything escalates, my SILchildless, lives in a quiet area, has a dog that gets along with minehas offered to take ours on.

My dog get two hours of walking a day, plenty of attention throughout the day, etc.

We used a baby cage until the dcs were too big. It was brilliant, and fun for them and stopped them falling down the stairs. We somehow destroyed countless gates, so this thing was a lifesaver! It was also easier this way as the children were younger than the dogs and far more likely to pick things up.

My dad had a scottish terrier that nipped my brother on the nose when he was little (dog was a resuce one, that had to be taken back that day)

Now he has a AWFUL scar on his nose. He is now 23.

I would get rid of ANY animal that nipped my child. Its not if its WHEN they will do it again.

The dog must feel threatend otherwise wouldn't nip.

Our miniature poodle nipped DD1 twice when she was around 20 months old and he was about 6 months old. both times she startled him from a sound sleep. We talked to the behaviourist, changed his bed for a more secure kennel/crate, implemented the recommended training, got him neutered when the time came. They both learned how to behave around each other and it was fabulous.

They had a beautiful relationship up until he was stolen this summer. :(
