Shock diagnosis for Lhasa Apso (toilet issues)

I went to the vets yesterday with my 9 year old Lhasa Apso as she has been having difficulties pooping. This has been going on a few weeks but over the last week she is really straining with very little eliminated. What is expelled is no longer round but more flat. She is well in herself, eating & drinking normally and excited about walks etc.

So the vet examined her by feel alone and suggested it is very bad news and likely she has a bowel tumour. He said there is very little that can be done other than making her more comfortable with stool softeners and anti inflammatory. He said they could operate to see what is going on but if they find it to be as bad as he expects then it would be kindest not to bring her around from the operation.

Of course I was very shocked, dismayed and very upset. I have spoken to him again today and asked if I can go to the main vet hospital (my vets is a satellite site) for a scan to determine what is going on. So the hospitals insistence, and fact he had written in the notes that she may have only days, we have a scan booked for tomorrow.

Has anyone had similar with their dogs and is it such a pessimistic outlook?

I'm sorry you've had such bad news.

My childhood JRT had similar tumours. He was ten years old and not castrated - he had testicular cancer which spread to his lower bowel, causing him similar difficulty in defecating. He was prescribed stool softeners but quite quickly was unable to pass waste at all and was in pain. He was put to sleep a few weeks after his first problems with straining, scooting etc.

Very sorry about your news. I have no experience but couldn't read and run. Will be thinking of you today, and I know that you'll do the best for your dog xxx

Unfortunately you were right, we have had a scan and biopsy today. It is cancer and the mass fills over 2/3 the pelvic cavity. There are very few options open to us, so we have brought her home to allow the family to say goodbyes. We plan to spend a nice day with her tomorrow, walk in our favourite park and nicest food for small meals, allow her to sleep on the bed.

Then take her back Saturday.

I can not believe how quickly this has happened.
