Anyone else have a dog that's too polite to poo in company?

Quite often (but not always) I walk the dog with my friend and her 2 dogs, and my dog has never done a poo when we've been on a walk with them. When it's just me walking him, as soon as he reaches some grass he'll go. But not if we're in company.

We did our whole walk today with my friend and as we got to my house I said 'Ooh he's not done a poo!' and she frowned and said 'You know, I don't think I've ever seen him poo!'

Is he too polite or just really embarrassed?

Haha no. I wish! Bushydog will shit anywhere in front of anyone.

happygardening · 11/09/2012 20:52

One of mine is to embarrassed/polite/shy to poo when he's on his lead unless he's absolutely desperate or I've forgotten the poo bags and am trying to get to somewhere it won't matter to much before letting him off in which case he'll go three times!!!

stleger · 11/09/2012 21:07

Ddog spends about five minutes choosing the ideal spot, then doing a poo dance. If anyone moves nearby, he has to start again in another place. Another dog or human nearby means he can't 'perform' as he is too nosey.

Minstrelsaremarvellous · 11/09/2012 21:09

we have a black lab who won't poo on a lead and when he does go we say it's his private poo as he hides his head!

tooearlytobeup · 11/09/2012 22:38

Our dog will poo in front of people, although he looks very selfconcious if you watch. He wont pee or poo on walks though unless absolutely desperate. He waits until we get home then runs to the door to be let into the garden Hmm

out2lunch · 11/09/2012 22:39

mine hides in a bush

out2lunch · 11/09/2012 22:40

i trained him to wee on command as a pup if he doesn't want to go he shakes his head

My friend once walked my spaniel and in excitement she did lots of little poos instead do her normal one.

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 12/09/2012 07:11

BlueBell is that your friend or your spaniel? :o

Minstrel must be a black lab trait. Our black lab will only go in long grass with his head in a hedge and his back to you so you can't see him. Grin

suburbandream · 12/09/2012 13:14

Ha ha, I wish! Mine seems to deliberately seek a crowd, especially likes doing a massive poo in front of builders/painters/window cleaners/people watering their front gardens/anyone basically who will stop and watch me faffing about with the poo bags Grin

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 12/09/2012 13:28

Minstrel and Iseenodust - another black lab here who likes to go in long grass with his back to you. I think he thinks that if he can't see us, we can't see him!

stowsettler · 12/09/2012 13:37

Mine likes to poo in private, she waits until her brother and I have walked on a bit, then finds a nice bush to hide under. Unfortunately, said brother is distinctly less inhibited!

wiggofan · 12/09/2012 13:51

iseenodust - must be a general lab trait, mine's a yellow lab and he won't poo unless he can go in long grass or undergrowth. He takes ages to get in position and always ends up with his back to us.

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 12/09/2012 13:54

My dog's not a lab though, he's a greyhound!

He always turns his back to poo though. Even in the back garden, he turns his back towards the house :o

Hahaha surburban. SpicyDog is the same. She has a favourite spot between the tube station and bus stop. That is fun at rush hour. She also often maintains eye contact whilst pooing.

That's funny Grin maintaining eye contact when pooing. If I could see my dog's face (always has his back to me) he'd probably have his eyes closed.

Happiestinwellybobs · 12/09/2012 16:15

A black lab here too - he thinks all poo, but especially his own is vile and disgusting. He spends time finding a good spot (also does the 'preparing to poo' dance), but the minute he is done, he runs off and pretends it is not his. He won't walk on our lawn if there is a poo on it!

Canidae · 12/09/2012 21:37

Dog1 won't poo/wee on the lead. Dog2 will go anywhere, in front of anyone!

panicnotanymore · 13/09/2012 09:49

Dog1 is very tidy and will shove his bum as far under a hedge as possible. If there is a deep ditch he will either get into the ditch or hang his bum over the edge. He started doing this as a small puppy after he saw me going round the garden with a shovel clearing up after him.

Dog2 is not tidy, but he will not go if there is anything even remotely interesting going on. This is a nightmare when go out, as he will not go when the neighbour lets him out, even though she gives him free run of the field for an hour. He plays for an hour, then goes back in.... where he poos. As he is house trained, and knows this isn't on, he will then attempt to eat it to remove the evidence. Grim...

Daisybell1 · 13/09/2012 19:29

Our old boy is very clean and tidy and won't poo in front of anyone but me. And even then he goes in nettles, behind a tree, or up against a fence. OH thinks it's because he's not top dog and so feels vulnerable when he goes.

higgle · 14/09/2012 13:14

We had a dachshund who would only poo in very long grass and was very reluctant if he thoght you were watching him.

midori1999 · 15/09/2012 13:29

Maybe he's too distracted to do a poo?

One of my bitches will not poo on the lead and she will avoid weeing on the lead at all costs too. I once had to stay in motorway services with her and three DC as my DH was in a nearby hospital. Obviously the dog had to stay on the lead there and I stood for ages each day, several times a day, waiting for her to poo in the toileting area. She wouldn't go at all. One morning I took her out and waited and waited and waited... still no poo. Took her back in and popped toreception to get the 'breakfast box' for the children and as soon as I got back in the room (to cries of 'Muuuuummmmm...) I knew what had happened. The little madam had poo'd right in the middle of the bed!!! Shock
