Doggy treats for dog without many teeth

We have a beautiful foster greyhound with us at the moment who was in a pretty bad way when she came to us. She has had major dental work and all but her canine teeth have been removed. We're doing OK on food and I wa delighted this week to find she's gained over a kilo since she's been with us, but I'm struggling a bit on the treat front.

We use small treats to practice recall with all the fosters (got three in at the moment) and most are hard or biscuity. Went to PAH this afternoon for a browse, but unless we pay a fortune for sausage chunks, nothing really leapt out at us.

Are we going to have to stick with small chunks of cheese or diced sausage, or does anyone have any suggestions for our beautiful foster girl?

squeezy cheese. The sort that comes in toothpaste like tubes. Squirt a little bit out and she can lick it off the end. (Added bonus is that your pockets stay clean as well)

Ooh yes, squeezy cheese! (Primula is it called?) you get it in different flavours, cheese and ham, cheese ad chives, and just cheese I think.

You could try making your own liver cake. Its realy cheap and nice and soft. (our dogs go nuts for it!)

Pack of liver (less than £1 in super markets)
1 egg
Clove of garlic
enough flour to make it cake consistancy

Throw the liver egg and garlic in a blender and wizz up
mix in flour untill you have a cake consistancy (amount varies depending on amount of liver)
Put in cake tin and bake @180c for 15mins (keep an eye as could need little longer/less)

When cool you can cut into appropriate sizes chunks and put some in fridge to use over next few days and then freeze rest in batches to use as and when required.

We somtimes add some chopped parsley or mint to our mix as well.

Also suggesting making your own treats. Mine love tuna cake. Just chuck a tin of tuna or pilchards with an egg and bit of flour. Mix it all up and bake. Squidgy and yummy!

We already give liver as a regular (but revolting Wink) treat.

Love the ideas here - thank you. Will def try squeezy cheese, and like the idea of tuna cake - am a bit of a wuss with liver. Blush

Just found DH giving her bits of cheese - she was looking very happy!

Aww good luck. She sounds like a sweetie. I made my boy a birthday cake using mince turkey, egg, flour and grated carrot. That was soft and cut in squares quite will.

Peanut butter!!!

GoldenPrimrose123 · 11/09/2012 18:11

Paté?

Scuttlebutter · 11/09/2012 18:50

She loves pate - we used that as a carrier for her antibiotics and painkillers. Haven't tried peanut butter - I was thinking more of something I could pick up in my hands to use as a training treat etc. but will certainly try her with that as a general "just because" treat. Smile

You could do with peanut butter and pate squeezy tubes like the Primula :o
