Dog shivering

So yesterday SIL told us that MIL's dog is really ill - constantly shaking, laying under SIL's bed shaking, and wouldn't move when called for breakfast. Me and DH said to get her to the vet. Today we've been told she's not shaking like she was yesterday (so presumably still shaking but not as much) and that she's now eating and drinking. Any ideas on the cause and whether her not shaking so much does indicate she's getting better.

Disclaimer: I still think they should get her to the vet, I'm of the mind 'better safe than sorry' and don't take risks with my dog's health. I do get quite pissed off when they talk about how upset they are that their dog is ill but will avoid taking her to the vet if they think they can get away with it. If it's something serious and they still won't go me and DH will end up having to.

My JRT regularly shivers, or quakes - he regularly gets bad tummies. I suspect she was poorly, but as she's eating and drinking she may be over the worst. I'd still take her to the vet's to be sure though.
