One of 'those' walks

Took Jasper for his morning constitutional and he excelled himself with truly horrendous behaviour. First, he came across a basset hound and was fine with it until I went to stroke the old chap. Then he got very gobby indeed. The basset told him off and stalked off in high dudgeon, leaving me apologising to the owner (who was lovely and gracious about my hooligan hound). Then he spotted a dog on lead across the field and made a beeline. He has literally never done this before. I managed to recall him before he got too close, but he was close enough to attract the attention of the other dog which left its owner digging her heels in to the field to hang on to him. Again, I had to apologise (from a distance) as her dog was clearly unhappy at being approached at all and it was totally my fault. Then we happened across a teenage boy on his way to football practice. He had a ball. Jas ran to him and jumped up once before I got him back. Little sod kept dancing out of lead distance, too, so I ended up having to stand still and wait for him to decide to come back to me. It was a catalogue of shit dog manners and bad ownership. I could do with a gin tbh.

Yesterday an owner with a fellow giant breed raced over as I instructed him to stop as mine was mean. His processing was slow so then we had a show of teeth and lunging which made him practically run away.

Two of mine then revealed their tummy bug to haVe returned by shitting poo jelly next to the playground. The industrial clean up took ages and I dropped a dog lead in poo.

Sigh. Just off again now.

Aah, nothing better after another poo, snappy arse of a walk! Had to do a distance apology too...stupid little dog. Grr need to drink today and train tomorrow:)

Have a gin yourself:)

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/09/2012 14:10

I might. I am currently sniggering at the hell hound as he's just got back from the groomers. He is most put out, as he smells of cologne and is now sporting a fetching red bandana Grin

Every walk with my two beasts is 'one of those walks'. So embarrassing.

TunaPastaBake · 01/09/2012 14:38

Is there a full moon Grin - mine was a pain today - on the lead stood talking to a friend (me talking not the dog ) and she kept barking and tugging at the lead ( the dog not the friend) - had to keep interrupting my conversation with loud NOs directed at the dog - most disconcerting.

And as the football season has started ... well don't start me on little cones, footballs and water bottles Wink

TheMonster · 01/09/2012 14:48

Yes! It was a full moon!

wiggofan · 01/09/2012 15:34

Full moon, that explains it, will be prepared next time.
My 2 yr old lab hasn't jumped up at anyone on a walk for over a year, UNTIL TODAY!
He picked his moment, got dripping wet and muddy in the river, then dashed up to two women walking towards us and jumped all over one of them trying to get her to play, covering her in mud and almost knocking her off her feet. The other woman (not being jumped on) explained that it was her daughter, and she had Reyes Syndrome and couldn't talk, and she had steel rods in her back Sad. Thank God she didn't fall over. The mother was lovely and said her daughter hadn't been frightened. I was mortified and so annoyed with myself, I always carry a whistle for just this kind of scenario as he responds well to the stop signal, but I didn't react quickly enough.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 01/09/2012 15:40

oh yes, the full moon and windy days make for interesting walks! My super obedient 3yr old GSD takes himself off to see other dogs across a footie pitch, steals tennis balls (despite having one in his mouth) and has sketchy recall! The rest of the time he is the perfect dog. He means no malice, he is a giant softie, but over the past few days he has run up to a bunch of teenage boys scaring the bejesus out of them wanting stroked (he NEVER does that), stolen another dogs ball, wondered off with another family and just generally been 'weird'.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/09/2012 15:43

Oh thank all that is holy that it isn't just me and my crap dog

Mine attacked me t'other day. My finger is still quite sore where his tooth went right in, but it's getting better now.

We have decided that along with the training we are already doing to get him to accept being in the car in close proximity to other dogs he must also be muzzled to prevent him causing any further injuries to me or another dog Sad

They're missing their long off lead walk today because I have the children and I just don't trust him to be in the same car as them. Once he decides he needs to protect himself at all costs he doesn't care what he is attacking as long as he gets it before it gets him.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/09/2012 16:17

Eek DOoin. All power to you. I don't think I could begin to manage that situation :(

TheMonster · 01/09/2012 16:36

D0oin, you have my sympathy. My index finger on my right hand will never be the same after I tried to sto my two beasts fighting back in January.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 01/09/2012 16:45

It was a blue moon, means a second full moon in a month, unusual, let's all blame that shall we?! Wink

beancurd · 01/09/2012 17:49

Owch doin, two of mine are like that. My leg will never be the same after being mistaken for a mean dog.

Wonder if that was moon related!

fuzzypicklehead · 02/09/2012 18:13

I'm feeling better reading this thread. I came online (despite ban on all non-work computer activities) to search for advice on my hooligan foster dog. Foolish boy thinks other dogs are for eating, and failing that for herding by snapping at their flanks. Today's walk along the beach: interesting.

SheilaWheeler · 02/09/2012 19:33

I've just come back from 'one of those walks' planning a similar thread in my head. We're still working on recall and have spent a few days (pup and I) working hard on it. I thought I'd cracked it yesterday only to have 'make me' today from the stubborn Springer. Like you chickens I ended up standing on my own, in the the middle of a field, waiting until he deigned to rejoin me.

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmm · 04/09/2012 21:28

Get 2 deaf great danes you will never moan about recall again.. hehe Hmm
