Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Oops Xmas Grin

MagratGarlik · 26/12/2012 20:51

Aside from various bugs doing the rounds in our house, we've had a nice, if quiet Christmas. Jessie loves her new coat and both almost got the entire Christmas dinner yesterday as I dropped it on the floor! (Not turkey as I am pescetarian, so salmon en croute instead). Still, worked out OK in the end.

Scuttlebutter · 26/12/2012 21:11

We had a lovely day yesterday. Hounds had the remains of the turkey giblest (DH had roasted these separately with some veggies to make foundation of gravy) plus a small quantity of turkey. V happy!

Also loved their presents from Cunny and Sprocket! And I have been wearing my elf hat and DH has been wearing a reindeer jumper. One of our friends is coming over for lunch tomorrow and the grundparents are coming for the New Year. All is considerably improved by the damson gin....

Scuttlebutter · 26/12/2012 21:14

And if anyone is a Milgi customer, we have just launched our online dog show. £25 for a sighthound charity of your choice for winning pic - any pointy wearing a Milgi item. More info on our FB page, and will be on the website shortly. Xmas Grin

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 27/12/2012 22:15

Sounds like you had a lovely day on Tuesday then Scuttle, I'm so pleased they liked their treats (even though we already know that someone likes the feet Xmas Wink).

Online dog show you say?

Scuttlebutter · 27/12/2012 22:43

Well, we had a really lovely day today. A friend came over to lunch. She is a very special lady - she looked after Norty Minx when she came out of the Death Row pound and until she came to us. It was an emotional day for her and for us when she handed her over and it's so nice that we see her regularly and she gets a good dose of Minx love. She came over today and Minx's tail was going at Warp Factor 12 and she insisted on cwtching on the sofa next to her - which was so lovely to see. Anyway we ended up having a fantastic time and all really enjoyed ourselves. She was also particularly entertained by DH wearing his comedy reindeer jumper. Xmas Grin

Scuttlebutter · 27/12/2012 22:46

Yes, Cunny, though I am thinking of that picture you have of your "smaller" hound that I am expecting to see Xmas Wink. Had a chat to a lady I know today about rosettes - we are having some very nice ones made. Sprocket needs to build up his collection... Xmas Grin

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 27/12/2012 23:30

I have sent a few pictures Xmas Smile all seperate emails though as my phone can't send more than one pic per email Xmas Hmm

I often think how lovely it is that dogs never seem to forget people who cared for them. If Jill and Andy (from LGT) ever pop in to see us, just to nip in to collect old duvet covers/duvets etc, Sprocket goes mad with excitement! He doesn't do that if just anyone visits, and it's not as if he spent loads of time at Jills kennels either, at least he hasn't for a few years anyway!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 30/12/2012 16:52

Well what a bloody day I've had! Woke up at half 8 to see a text off my sister saying our brother has been stabbed :( he's in intensive care, stable but critical. Can't believe it, he's the biggest softie ever, hasn't got a bad bone in his body. It was an intended attack :(

MagratGarlik · 30/12/2012 17:12

Bloody hell, Cunny!

I hope he will be alright.

mistlethrush · 02/01/2013 10:34

Happy New Year all - and I hope that your brother is OK Cunny?

Mistlehound is officially ours now - and has therefore been allowed off the lead, to her great enjoyment. It has gone better than we could have expected - she does have some recall, most of the time, although can get distracted when other dog walkers insist on playing fetch with their dog going in the opposite direction, even when they can hear us yelling after her.... I don't think she's got collie in the mix, based upon the lack of retrieve - apparently a frisbee is to chase (we roll them along the ground) and then to run around the field wildly with, but not return with - and you need a tennis ball in the other direction in order to get it back!.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 04/01/2013 11:35

Sprocket has gone on holiday :( he snapped at DD the other day, right in her face, and he keeps weeing everywhere when we go out. Took him to the vets and he's absolutely fine, so she put it down to the stress he's picking up on. Rang the rescue in tears an hour and 20 minutes ago and he's gone already. They found a foster family with 2 other greyhounds that were happy to take him at this short notice. It's not fair on him at all. Especially if we keep having to dash off to the hospital in panic like last night :(

MagratGarlik · 04/01/2013 12:37

Cunny, so sorry Sad.

Will Sprocket come back to you, or not? (or have you not decided yet?)

I know it comes as a shock if your dog threatens your lo, it certainly threw us for a while (and was the cause of many an argument) when Jessie snarled at ds2. The single thing which released the most pressure though was to be told it was OK to send her back to the rescue. In the end, obviously we didn't, but the idea that we had a choice was a great liberator because it allowed us to consider all our possible options, if that makes sense?

mistlethrush · 04/01/2013 13:57

Sorry things are bad at the moment Cunny - but you know that he's safe in a place that he won't be so stressed and it means that you won't have to worry about him as well as everything else - I hope that things improve.

I wouldn't even think about the ifs and buts at the moment and get through this initially and once everything's back on track, then start to consider your options.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 04/01/2013 14:53

I really hate to say this, but I don't actually know Magrat :( Jill (rescue lady) said that he went off with them as happy as anything. I want him back but there's no saying how long my brother will be critical for. Thread about it here if you want to read how he's doing. I'll be absolutely heartbroken to lose him if it comes to that but I know that it'll be in his best interests. Someone made a point to me the other day that he could be pining for dog company and we don't want 2 dogs so the only other option to that would be to let him go to someone with other dog/s. Jill is putting me in contact with his foster mum so she can let me know how he's doing :(

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 04/01/2013 14:56

DD is at her grandmas for today and tonight, I've been at my friends house and I'm back now, the house just feels too big and empty. I was gutted when he didn't come greet me at the front door and it suddenly hit me like a train that he isn't here.

mistlethrush · 04/01/2013 16:10

I know all about empty houses. It does feel very strange without a dog there.

You know sprocket is safe, that's the main thing, you don't have to cross any bridges at the moment, you've more than enough on your plate as it is.

If, in time, you do decide that Sprocket would be better off with another dog and you definitely don't want another, I'm sure that he'll find another good home, hopefully that you can keep in touch with him from. That is the benefit of starting out with a good rescue. There are also plenty of dogs out there that specifically say in their details 'would prefer to be the only dog'.

I hope that there's some more positive news from the hospital soon.

dibsmum · 05/01/2013 00:47

Hello. Really bad timing I can see people on here have had some bad news, so sorry to hear that. I just found the thread though and wanted to say hi. I have a beautiful lurch and a gorgeous staff and a grumpy cat to keep them in check! Oh and of course my baby daughter who they adore!

MagratGarlik · 05/01/2013 00:54

No problem, dibsmum. Welcome.

What type of lurcher do you have? (Ours is a 'grippet' or whippet x greyhound), but we also he have a Whippet who has food allergies like the DC's and we still can't find out why.

dibsmum · 05/01/2013 01:45

Thank you Magrat. We don't know what he is to be honest. He was a rescue. He is smaller than a greyhound but not by much and he looks very greyhound like. beautiful boy Grin

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 05/01/2013 13:08

Welcome to the cushion dibs :) you're always welcome on the pointy cushion, don't worry about the timing, it keeps me busy :) your dogs sound lovely, maybe your Lurcher is a Grippet too!

dibsmum · 05/01/2013 17:57

Thank you Santa. How are things? He could well be a grippet, I had wondered but I thought maybe he was a bit big.

mistlethrush · 05/01/2013 19:00

Ours definitely isn't a grippet. I understand from lurchery people that the rough coat of hers is likely to come from Bedlington at some stage... goodness knows what else. I don't think there's collie - because she's happy to chase balls but then plays with them and doesn't retrieve!

MagratGarlik · 05/01/2013 19:06

Our grippet looks very much like a very short legged greyhound, with a whippet knobbly back. She has a greyhound face and legs and is bigger boned than a whippet, but she is only 23 inches to her shoulder and has a 22 inch coat, so obviously much smaller than a greyhound. I know one that lives near us though who looks almost exactly like a greyhound and I've seen another who looked like pure whippet.

dibsmum · 05/01/2013 20:39

That's really interesting he probably is one then Smile
