Pregnant or not?

Asking on behalf of a friend! Yes really! Said friend has lakeland terrier bitch who was put to stud but it didn't go well, however the dog now has filled out around her middle and developed breasts (is that what they are called in a dog??) and is leaking milk. If there were pups they would be due this weekend - but her tummy does not feel very full, and no signs of anything wriggling or kicking. Do dogs obviously tend to look pregnant or can they still look quite slim? It would be her first litter. Or do you think a false pregnancy more likely? Obviously the arrival (or not!) of the pups will tell us for sure but we are all very excited!

Can she get her scanned at the vets?

Hiya yes she could but she is being tight!

We've been down to the vets for scans before. The worry was that our pup had been caught and might be pregnant. It turned out to be a phantom pregnancy which we needed to know about as they can reoccur and I think there's a link to hormone imbalances?

Please try to persuade her to take the dog to the vets. Any cost would be minimal compared to raising pups and if it were me I would really want to know what's going on.

I am really concerned about your friend's dog. Your friend deliberately tried to breed her, and now doesn't seem to want to take proper care of her. Does she know what to do if pups are imminent, and what signs to look out for in case a vet is urgently needed? I agree with Daisybell1, please persuade your friend to take her to the vet and find out for sure, and get some advice if she is pregnant. It can be very risky, especially with a first pregnancy.

Hi thanks for your messages, said friend is very sensible and has had other dogs with pups before, she has a regular vet that the dog is under the care of but they quoted something like 80 pounds for a scan which seemed like a lot. I was being semi-sarcastic when I said she was being tight, of course she would immediately seek help if it was needed. She is getting everything ready for the arrival of pups on the assumption that they will arrive, it's just that to look at the dog you wouldn't think she had any room in her tummy for them.

This close to birth, an experienced breeder would be pretty certain about whether or not a bitch was in pup. A day or two before birth, it's about as obvious as a slap in the face.

TBH, it sounds as though your friend is in it just for the money. Why else would she begrudge spending money on her pregnant bitch? Is she a BYB?
