Dog and chocolate cake and courgettes

So, I gave our 9 month old lab a good hour's walk this morning because we were going to the zoo this afternoon. I tired him out, gave him lots of water and his lunch and out we went.

We came home and he's eaten 90% of the chocolate birthday cake from yesterday. It was sitting on the window sill with a kitchen work surface between it and the floor iyswim. How he got at it, I've no idea. He's not the greatest jumper.

We picked 8 big fat courgettes on Sunday and they were on the work surface waiting to be cooked tonight. He's chewed those up too.

Smashing.

I left him with two chews, his dolly toy, his purple ball chew and two flat footballs which he loves. Clearly I cannot leave him alone for 3.5 hours. Sigh.

Chocolate is very bad for dogs, isn't it? Does he need a visit to the vet?

it si very bd, I would keep a close eye, I think it depends on the size of dog and % of chocolate. someone who knows more will be along shortly.

He'll probably just be spectacularly sick, my (a bit bigger than a lab) dog once ate 3 boxes of Belgian chocolates...he wasn't too well for about half a day, but just an upset stomach nothing more serious.

Dark chocolate the worstbut a large amount of cocoa in a cake not ideal. I would (as a vet seeing your dog) induce vomiting just in case.

You should speak to your vet in case they need to induce vomiting. They will be able to check the amount of chocolate consumed relative to body weight, and know if you need to worry or not. Dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate.

I called the out of hours vet down the road. She said to keep an eye on him.

He's fine this morning thank goodness.. No puking. No mooching about. Full of beans. Obviously he has an iron constitution. Cake I can understand but courgettes?!?!?
