I have got myself into a bit of a desperate position with my 2 dogs. We are moving abroad in 2 weeks and for the last couple of months my friend said that she would have the dogs. She has now found out she is pregnant and having lost a couple of babies a while back she now doesnt want the dogs so she can take her pregnancy very easy. Whilst I totally understand this it has left me with the problem of what to do with them. They are lovely dogs but are large and strong.I would quite happily pay for them for the rest of their lives but where do I find someone willing to take on 2 big dogs in the near future. They have never been separated for more than a few minutes so I would feel doubly cruel if I separated them...I can manage for a few weeks by kenneling them but dont know what to do after that ! Can anyone give me any advice ?

Can you not take them with you?

you need to find a decent rescue with a no-kill policy.
they will hopefully bbe able to find the dogs a good home

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 22/08/2012 14:14

can you give more details please? What breed, colour, size, and where in the UK are you? That would help with rescue details, but to be honest, 2 weeks is a desperate situation. Sad

Where are you moving to? Is there an option to take them with you?

alypally · 22/08/2012 14:33

They are Rhodesian Ridgebacks and are almost 8 years old. We are moving into a city centre rented apartment and they are used to a rural lifestyle. We are in Cumbria. I feel I am badly letting them down but this move is already stressful , taking 3 teenagers away from their friends etc so I just never gave it any thought that my friend having them wasnt a certainty.

Your dogs will adapt to your surroundings. It's often entertaining for dogs to have the vast array of different smells a city offers and there will be green somewhere.

Contact they should be able to help Let me know if they can't and we can look at Plan b.

alypally · 22/08/2012 14:48

Thank you Cuebill, I did email them a week ago but havent had a reply and the answermachine of the lady is full too. This is why I started panicking today ! I have resent the email to another email on the site and will keep my fingers crossed !

Is there an option to take them with you until you find someone/somewhere to take them? It will ease the pressure a little.
I imagine you've tried these people already?

Sorry to hear this, I can imagine how stressful it is. Whilst I totally understand you wanting to rehome them together, there may be a better chance of each dog being rehomed with a family who already have a dog (easier to take on one new dog than two). I always maintained that if I died before my first two dogs that I'd want them rehomed together - I outlived them but inevitably one died before the other. I then always thought that maybe separating dogs wasn't such a bad thing. I have two now, and if anything happened they would definitely go to separate homes (they're large dogs too!) Good luck - I hope you find a good solution.

Can you contact the Scottish breed specific rescue?

NarkedRaspberry · 24/08/2012 14:56

As you're in Cumbria?
