Posted yesterday about our old hound who has gone completely batty. Decided to do the right thing before he gets any worse so the vet is booked for 10 past 5 this evening. Thanks to everyone who posted to reassure me we werent doing this for our own convenience. Very very sad but it would be cruel to keep him going in his state of confusion. :(

So sorry. Thoughts are with you.

Well its done. He was very distressed as he hated vets andit took two doses to dispatch him. It Was awful and not the way you would want his life to end but there was no other way. I know it was the right thing and we have saved him from more suffering but my god it was upsetting. I have only been more upset when I lost my daughter. The house is very empty today. Rest in peace old boy :(

So sorry, it is difficult isn't it? You have let him go with dignity.

hazeldog · 23/08/2012 11:47

I wish that was true. We have let him go terrified fighting in a puddle of his own urine on the floor of a strange room. The vet described him as "incredibly distressed" which I know means it was the right thing to do. I think I will feel better when we have his ashes back. We are going to take them back to where my partner first had him on his canal boat and scatter him where he has the happiest times of his life.

Oh OP I am really sorry that you had to watch go through that.

hazeldog · 23/08/2012 11:57

I hope he can forgive us wherever he is.

Oh hazel :( Of course he forgives you. You did the best thing you could under the circumstances. Why did it take two attempts? How upsetting for you all x

hazeldog · 23/08/2012 12:40

He was fighting so much the first shot didn't all go in

Oh God Hazel :( I'm so sorry x But he is at peace now, and maybe it shows that you did the right thing. He was clearly very confused and distressed, so you gave him peace. I hope that you can let this sad memory fade and remember the happy years you had with your dog x

Thanks. I'm out with our lurchers now having a very long walk and a good cry and thinking about how long its been since we could take the old boy out with us. Its been almost a year since he was able to enjoy a proper walk. Just keep thinking about that poem that goes " do not go gently into that good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light" that just about sums it up really.
