Dog head injury

I've never posted here before but am just devastated about my darling lab & wondered if anything similar had happened to anyone else's dog. We're holidaying by the beach & took our 3 year old lab out yesterday but wouldnt let her by the sea because it was too rough & shes a water addict loon! Instead took her to little park to play ball on the grass - but she leapt into boating lake & must have hit something and didn't surface :(( my dh rescued her & some wonderful local dog walkers stopped & helped us get her to nearest vets where she has been monitored since but she just isn't standing up or putting any weight on her legs. Dh is currently driving her 4 hours to nearest MRI scanning facility while I look after our babies but am so so worried for my darling doggy girl. I went to see her in the car before he left & her tail wagged wildly when she saw me but her eyes looked so shimmery & pained :( not sure why I'm posting really but just in pieces & having to keep brave face on here for my toddler & baby. What could she have done? :(

Sounds like some kind of nerve damage. It may be temporary due to local swelling as a result of the injury. But it may not be treatable.

:(

Oh noSad just googled nerve damage in dogs & now even more upset. My poor fur baby - I can't bear it Sad

Couldn't read and run.

Try not to panic until you have the results of the MRI scan.

Hope the problem is only temporary and she heals well

The waggy tale is a good sign, if she was paralysed she wouldn't be able to wag it.

Try not to worry, I don't know about in dogs, but people can have a nerve damage issue and be unable to walk temporarily, and they go on to be fine.

Will keep everything crossed for you. xx

any update? hope she's ok

sunnybobs · 16/08/2012 21:13

She's holding on - got to specialist Bath vets & they've X rayed her & there no fractures on body or spinal cord to see so far. They've decided not to do the MRI tonight as neuro vet thinks having to knock her out might actually put her backwards at the moment. So still unsure but feeling teeny bit better than hours ago - just wish I could be with her - we're so soft but normally when shes ill we sleep downstairs with her. She was our first fur baby and got us through all our fertility treatment & now we've had two babies in two years & she's been amazing with them both. She's a great yellow lab, soft as butter & adored by all the family. Sorry to ramble and thank you do much for your replies! Am still shocked that just a jump into a small pool has her under a neuro surgeon & spinal cord specialist :(( praying for good vibes for her all night. Thank you for messages x

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this. You must be in pieces. I've got everything crossed that your lovely girl has a peaceful night and makes an excellent recovery.

thestringcheesemassacre · 16/08/2012 21:34

I hope she hangs on for you. I love dogs, we lost ours in february to a sudden illness. try and get some rest. thinking of you.

Selks · 16/08/2012 21:42

It must be so worrying for you but try to keep in mind that it could be something temporary such as concussion.

Hope you hear some positive news soon.

mad4 · 16/08/2012 21:44

so sorry for your darling girl!
the best i can say is that if the is somewhere with acess to MRI its prob a referral center. so therefore she has the very best of care.
the best vets, the best nurses, and they will all want nothing more than to see her walk out of the clinic and home to you.

if she can recover, she is in the very best place to do so, and if she cant, she will be surrounded by caring and love until the very end.

try to keep positive, it sounds really encouraging from their initial findings

thinking of you all op.
