How do you teach a dog to tell you it needs to go out?

Our lovely dog is almost 9 months old. He's quite reliable with regards housetraining, but if we don't notice he needs to go out, he'll take him off somewhere and wee.

Our older dog starts pacing/woofing if he wants to go out. This dog...nada. Nothing. The only way I know is that if he is sleeping and gets up, he needs to go out.

At night time, he usually sleeps through, but occasionally he gets up off the bed, and wanders out into the hallway. If we don't suss it (wake up!) then he'll relieve himself.

He's a quiet dog, rarely barks, etc., so how do you teach them to alert you?

Grin Flora

That happened to me flora. Dog was whining, but we are three storey so he has to whine pretty loudly. When I got downstairs he met me and was jumping all over me enthusiastically and shot to the back door - I let him out but he didn't do anything, just ran around wanting to play. He tried everything to stop me going back in doors, and when I did I found a huge crap in the middle of the rug. Bless his heart, I had obviously taken too long to get down the stairs, and having done the deed he was very keen to stop me from finding it.

TwoJues, is he a Toller? He's lovely. A friend at work has one (a very naughty girl) and I've fallen madly in love with her Grin. Does he have a white tail tip?

(oh and very cool training!)

twojues · 14/08/2012 19:48

Yes, he has the white tip on the tail.

I think Tollers are quite often "naughty", perhaps more picklish than naughty.

We are very proud of him as he is going to Crufts next year.

I just watched your video two, I'm so impressed :o

Ours did this too, would just stand by the door.

I'm going to whisper this, but every time we opened the door to let him out, we woofed. He soon caught on but gave us some very funny looks in the process

Our Greyhound just wanders around aimlessly if he needs to go. We found this out the hard way, the night before my 21st birthday. He came downstairs and wandered around and then all of a sudden we heard the sound of running water, looked up to see Sprocket cocking his leg up the hoover. Don't think DP or I have ever yelled so loudly! Spent ages that evening dabbing dog piss out of loads of little ridges in the hoover Angry

Thank you for all your replies Smile Perhaps he'd like to ring a bell? Grin
