Found a dog, we CAN'T keep her - West Yorkshire, can you suggest anywhere we can try?

Found a dog in our street this afternoon (JRT x shaggy terrier type). Asked around, nobody recognises her. Took her to emergency vets to be scanned for microchip - none.

Rang dog warden number to get out of hours arrangements and spoke to both "on call" places, first one is a long way away and told me to ring the other which is closer but full. One of the neighbours was interested in keeping the dog but she hasn't got back to us yet so we called the first receiving place back who basically told us to whistle.

So we have a dog in the house. Which would be fine but we have a demented toddler, a 2 month old and a cat who is terrified of dogs...

I have found a couple of local rescues online but they both closed at 8!

Would have phoned round earlier but the neighbour seemed like a dead cert. Dog is lovely, does anyone want it? I'll bring her to you!

Poor doggy, can you keep her until the morning? chances are someone has lost her and may come looking for her, maybe put a poster somewhere saying 'dog found' someone might claim her, if not i'm sure somewhere will take her in tomorrow.

Have you checked on DogsLost? Report her as found on there.

Legally you cannot just give a lost dog away, you have to notify the dog warden, although you do not have to hand the dog over to them. You do have to keep it and make an effort to find it's owner.

The trouble is that I can't report her as lost to the dog warden until Monday morning, what the hell am I supposed to do with her until then?!

West Yorkshire dog rescue website has just taught me that, I had no idea :( so essentially I have to keep her now for 36 hours and then she'll have to go to the horrible pound. ARGH.

She doesn't have to go to the pound. You can keep her and then rehome her via a rescue so long as you keep her for a period of no less than 28 days and make every effort to find her owner in that time (i.e contact vets, post on DogsLost, flyers up in pet shops etc)

If you do advertise her give only a brief description i.e small, shaggy dog found at X location and make the caller give you a description of the dog and it's sex. Some people reply to found dog adverts to try and grab themselves a free dog and they don't always want them for the right reasons Sad

I would offer to take her for you, but I am too far away to look for her owners properly.

Dogs trust has a place in Leeds that you could try.

I might know of someone who can help OP. Have PM'd you with the details.

Thanks for the tip about the flyers, there are a few things about her that are very distinctive so her owners should be able to describe her accurately.

I can't understand where she's come from - where we live isn't near dog walks or anything, there is a field at the end of the road but she has no interest in it and dogs that go missing off there are looked for.

She is a delightful little thing, if my toddler was less mental and my cat less affronted by the dog's presence I think we would be really tempted to keep her. I am falling in love with her :(
